Job Description
SPEC Services, Inc. is a premier Southern California energy and infrastructure engineering firm, specializing in gas utility, refining and midstream projects in the Western U.S. We are seeking a self-motivated and energetic applicant to lead systems engineering for a variety of energy infrastructure projects serving the Western and Southwestern United States. SPEC provides overall system planning for energy storage and transportation facilities and detailed design services to upgrade and expand existing systems and to develop new facilities.
We have an exciting new position for an experienced engineer. The position has a flexible 9/80 schedule with a hybrid/WFH work location, supporting the Fountain Valley office.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate directly with gas clients to identify project needs, develop project scoping documents, and support project execution
- Lead the design and engineering of compression systems, ensuring they meet a wide range of performance requirements and comply with relevant standards and regulations
- Preparation and review of various engineering deliverables (Drawings & Documents) such as Process Flow Diagrams, heat and material balances, P&I Diagrams, Cause & Effect Diagrams, control philosophies, shutdown philosophies, HAZOP Studies & reports, Operation & Maintenance Manuals, etc.
- Prepare and review specifications and data sheets for compressors, control systems, and related equipment
- Conduct feasibility studies and performance evaluations for new and retrofit compression projects
- Participate in compressor, Engine and gas turbine startup, performance testing and troubleshooting
- Provide technical support to operations and maintenance teams for existing compression systems
- Troubleshoot performance issues and implement corrective actions to optimize system efficiency
- Conduct root cause analysis for equipment failures and implement preventive measures
- Review of Client documents, specifications, datasheets, verification of FEED design & calculations
- Prepare and review instrument data sheets and specifications (control valves, PSV’s, meters, etc.)
- Participate in planning, cost control and scheduling for assigned projects
- Develop and review TIC estimates
- Develop economic analysis (maintenance and energy cost) for equipment selection
- Maintain effective communication and relationships with project team members and clients, with a commitment to building enduring relationships leading to customer satisfaction and loyalty
- Preparation & Issue of RFQ’s, evaluation of vendor’s quotations, clarifications, Technical Bid Analysis etc.
- Review of vendor’s documents, drawings, datasheets, specifications and calculations
- Coordinate with equipment vendors to develop project scope and execute detailed engineering
- Coordinate with torsional and acoustic analysis companies to ensure design is mechanically sound and components are properly selected
Skill Requirements

- Familiarity in applicable industry codes and standards is required, including:
- ASME - B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, BPVC Section VIII
- API – 541, 610, 614, 616, 617, 618, 619, 670, 671, 682, 686 etc.
- ISO 13631, 1940
- NFPA 37
- Knowledge of emissions control systems for engines and gas turbines
- Knowledge of engine and gas turbine auxiliary systems i.e., jacket water, Auxiliary water, fuel, starting systems (i.e., air, electric, hydraulic), lube oil etc
- Knowledge of compressor auxiliary systems. i.e., wet seals, dry seals, packing, lube oil, recycle system, etc.
- Knowledge of compressor control methods i.e., speed control, surge control, valve pockets, valve unloaders, variable volume pockets, slide valve, throttling, etc.
- Knowledge of machinery monitoring i.e., accelerometer, velometer, proximity, phase, knock, surge system, etc.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work
- Ability to visit local refinery, midstream and gas utility project sites for data gathering and inspections with occasional travel to farther locations
Experience and Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Chemical Engineering is required
- 5 years’ experience in the selection, design, optimization and troubleshooting of compressors
- Experience with various types of compressors and drivers (motors, engines, turbines)
- Experience with a variety of emissions control systems
- Experience with gas compression systems for natural gas processing, transmission, or storage
- California Mechanical Professional Engineer license is strongly preferred
- Energy infrastructure experience is preferred
- Engineering consulting and/or equipment packaging experience is preferred
- Experience with Ariel, DR Size, Leroi, Coolware and eRCM software is preferred
- A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required
Salary Range: $90k-$140k Annually
