Job Summary
NOTE: This recruitment may be used to fill up to two vacancies working 37.5 hours a week. Positions work at both transfer station locations (North Spokane and Spokane Valley), to meet staffing/scheduling needs.
Thisposition operates a Spokane Country transfer station tollhouse, providing customer service, determines type and weight of refuse being brought in and charges accordingly; this classification performs customer services and are responsible for the accurate and lawful recording of transactions occurring at County landfill transfer stations. Work involves applying procedures to determine the type and weight of refuse being brought to the transfer station and charging appropriately. Work is performed independently, under the general direction of a designated supervisor.
WHO MAY APPLY: This recruitment is open to all applicants meeting the minimum requirements. Priority consideration will be given to Spokane County employees in a position covered by the Master Contract submitting applications through 9/13/24. First consideration will be given to applicants working in Public Works in a position covered by the 1553 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); second consideration given to County-wide applicants in a position covered by the 1553 CBA; third consideration given to applicants covered by the Master Contract CBA; fourth consideration will be given to all other applicants.
TOTAL COMPENSATION:$45,384 - $63,494 annually.Total compensation is an estimate based upon base compensation, median retirement fund contributions, and current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates (including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability, and leave). The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

Examples of Duties
- Maintains confidentiality of all information in records and files.
- Assesses, collects and records cash, check and credit card transactions in accordance with established rate schedule; balances and reconciles daily collections.
- Operates a computerized automated scale system to obtain and electronically record the weight and/or volume of all materials delivered to transfer stations.
- Conducts visual inspection of incoming vehicles to determine acceptability of load or appropriate location of load; routes incoming and departing vehicles to and from appropriate disposal and recycling areas.
- Accounts for all daily transactions; maintains records of special accounts, special waste permits and/or temporary accounts; prepares appropriate deposit and no-charge transaction documents.
- Provides information to customers by telephone or in person about the rules, regulations and use of Spokane County Transfer Station facilities, including disposal and recycling fees, policies, procedures and options.
- Troubleshoots, or obtains support to help troubleshoot, scale automation, scales, cash register and other electronic/automated communication and operating systems; uses alternate operating procedures in the event of a system failure.
- Assists in training of new hires and extra help
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Cashiering or banking experience, including data entry tasks and working with the public.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Possess a valid driver's license
- Required to be bondable
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Knowledge of keyboarding, word processing, and general office practices including filing, indexing, cross-referencing methods.
- Knowledge of simple accounting.
- Knowledge of legal terminology and procedures, business English, punctuation and rules of grammar.
- Knowledge of basic computer programs, files, sort/merge requirements, and spreadsheet possibilities.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- Skilled in communicating effectively both orally and in writing, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
- Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, officials and the general public.
- Skilled in modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
