SUMMARY STATEMENT & PURPOSE:

The ophthalmic assistant is responsible for rooming patients, prepping for in office procedures, performing history and medication reconciliation, obtaining surgery consents, completing patient correspondence, patient education, and maintaining patient exam rooms.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:

  1. Reviews daily patient schedule, verifying appointments are scheduled appropriately and works with lead ophthalmic assistant to maintain good clinic flow. 
  2. Performs comprehensive patient workups within the EHR system and general patient education and communication.
  3. Responds daily to all tasks, e-mails, and phone calls.  
  4. Functions as a scribe for physician when needed. 
  5. Assists patients in completion of required forms with particular attention to detail and accuracy. 
  6. Responsible for maintaining cleanliness of exam rooms after each patient, including surgical instruments and equipment, monitors medications and supplies for expiration dates, performs deep-cleaning duties on a weekly/monthly basis.  
  7. Assist the physician in obtaining surgical consent and completing surgical paperwork.
  8. Assists in scheduling appointments when needed.
  9. Understands clinic billing and payment policies and protocols. Maintains knowledge regarding insurance plans, referral requirements, and clinic payment policy with the ability to communicate requirements to patients.  
  10. Maintains knowledge regarding ophthalmological terminology and medications and participates in professional skill and business-related continuing education as required.
  11. Occasionally functions as lead technician in lead's absence.
  12. Supports on-call physician as requested on weekends.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of six (6) months in a customer service role
  • Medical Assistant-Registered through Washington state (completed upon hire)
  • Possess and maintain computer skills to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn other software as needed 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ophthalmic or medical clinic experience
  • Willingness and ability to obtain certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)    
  • Previous experience with EHR

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, pull/push, carry, grasp, reach, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and lift. The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop/crouch, and crawl. 

 

The employee may be required to lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds.

 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, with or without corrective lenses; peripheral vision; depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Pay Scale: $20.00 - $30.00 per hour
