Job Description Summary: This position performs law enforcement duties including the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal acts within the school system; the apprehension and arrest of law violators; and the safeguarding of lives and property within Highlandville Elementary School and Spokane property as allowed with the commission.
Essential Job Functions:

  • The SRO’s primary role is to deter crime, uphold the law, protect life and property, and encourage safety within the school.
  • Investigate reported criminal acts, Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; review and study evidence; and conduct searches and surveillance.
  • Prepare reports, complete administrative paperwork, thoroughly document activities associated with investigations. Provide credible testimony in municipal, state, and federal court.
  • Provide a positive visible presence within Highlandville Elementary School.
  • Operate police vehicles and use weapons and special equipment.
  • The SRO will provide instructional classes and discussions concerning school safety, emergency preparedness, Federal and State laws, drug and gang resistance education, community law enforcement, and other related topics as requested to train staff members.
  • The SRO will meet and facilitate discussions with staff, students, and parents to solve problems, provide various crime prevention information, make referrals to other organizations/agencies such as drug rehabilitation or mental health facilities. The SRO should be an advocate for school policies, procedures, and initiatives at all times.
  • The SRO will act as a central point of contact and the face of investigations at Highlandville Elementary School.

Minimum Qualifications: * High school diploma or GED.

  • Missouri POST certification (Class-A Peace Officer License).
  • Current on Missouri POST required training hours.
  • Must maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws.
  • Must complete and pass a background check as required to work in a school setting.
  • Ability to effectively work with other local and state agencies.
  • Basic SRO certification or equivalent.
  • Crisis Intervention Team training.
  • ALICE or equivalent active shooter training.
  • May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, high/dangerous places or life threatening situations.
  • May be exposed to inclement outdoor weather, wet/humid conditions, vibration, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, loud noise levels, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, or potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals.
  • May be required to wear a respirator in certain situations.

  • Must be able to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, drive, stand, walk, reach with hands/arms, stoop/crouch, climb/balance, and operate mechanical equipment.
  • Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand, or finger movement to type and work on computer and/or related equipment.
  • Must be able to engage in foot pursuits/effect arrests.
  • May be required to lift 100 pounds or more.
  • Must be able to interact positively with students giving a positive impression for law enforcement. Must provide calm leadership.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Full-time Pay: $20.01 per hour. This position includes work from the start to the end of the school year, summer school, and the three staff training days at the start of school. Spokane R-VII follows a four day week calendar.
