Parks & Recreation
Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled labor for operations of the Parks & Recreation Department. Work involves litter pickup, general landscape duties, operating light machinery and using hand tools, etc. Employee must exercise some independent judgment and initiative in ensuring proper completion of assigned tasks.
Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.
Parks and Recreation
•Performs trash and debris pickup at various locations on uneven ground.
•Performs snow removal along s ide full time staff as required.
•Performs departmental janitorial duties as assigned.
• Assists with loading and unloading of equipment.
•Performs and assist crews in labor intensive departmental tasks.
•Assist and performs special event set up, staffing and break down.
•Performs various general landscaping duties such as mowing, trimming, raking
leaves, dragging and lining of athletic fields, set up and preparation of game fields,
performs athletic field and sports equipment maintenance and inventory etc.
•Uses power lawn mowers, string trimmers and various hand tools.
•Cleans equipment and vehicles as required.
•Drains fluids from small equipment and performs routine service and blade sharpening I replacement on equipment.
•Assists as semi- skilled labor in general painting, carpentry, lock and door maintenance, fencing and gate repairs, minor plumbing repairs, minor electrical repairs, HVAC troubleshooting and other trade work.
•Performs building and grounds maintenance work;
•Performs other related duties as required.
High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred.
Employee must be able to read and communicate verbally.
Employee in this position is required to wear safety shoes and uniform provided by the County.
Pre-employment drug test will be required (Utilities and Public Works only).
May be required to work weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather.
- Knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in basic landscaping and grounds maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of the operation of the equipment and tools used in grounds maintenance and digging work.
- Ability to use power lawn mowers, and power and hand tools.
- Ability to understand and learn the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions to be taken in grounds maintenance work.
- Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
