Job Description – Bus Driver - 21st Century

SUMMARY:  The position of Bus Driver for the 21st Century program is responsible for maintaining compliance and safety in transporting children to and from the 21st Century program daily.  Hours start at 4:30 pm and work approximately 2 to 3 hours per day.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 Signs in/out daily when arriving and departing any Springfield Urban League location.

1. Must utilize ADP Payroll Software for the inputting of time entries for payroll. 
2. Driver is responsible for the entries and updates to the routes in Child Plus.
3. The driver shall not leave the bus unattended at any time while transporting children.
4. Pick up children on time and deliver them to designated areas in a safe and efficient manner.
5. Return children to their homes at the end of the day.
6. Responsible for ensuring that each child is safely taken across any street crossing by the bus monitor, as needed.
7. Transport children to the centers or prearranged locations such as field trips.
8. Make certain good order is maintained in the vehicle for the safety of the children.
9. Ensure that the bus is never over capacity at any time. This also includes ensuring the staff to student ratio is in compliance. At all times, there is always one monitor on the bus when transporting students.
10. Timely daily arrival at center-based locations and family day activities.
11. The bus shall always be maintained in excellent condition including the interior and exterior of the unit.
12. The bus is inspected daily by the driver for mechanical or other flaws utilizing the State of Illinois Department of Transportation check-off sheets.
13. Bus maintenance is completed as requested by the Transportation Manager and mechanic.
14. Must attend in-service training and workshops at request of the Transportation Manager.
15. Drivers must not smoke or allow smoking, drink, or allow drinking on the bus at any time. No food is allowed on the bus.
16. Driver is responsible for ensuring the bus is transported to the State Testing Center when the inspection is due. The driver is also responsible for maintaining the brake testing for the bus.
17. Conducts and documents safety drills/evacuations monthly submitting documentation to the Transportation Manager.
18. Willing to cooperate with other staff members.

1. Completes the following and submits on a timely basis to the Transportation Manager

          a. Daily Bus Mileage Records

          b. Receipts for Gas Purchases

          c. Monthly Evaluation Drills

1. Ensures that the monitor completes bus sign-off sheets daily and child drop-offs are on an emergency document designating appropriate adult(s) for each child.
2. Utilizes the bus radio to inform the central office of pick-up, drop-off complications and informs the central office of run completion prior to exiting the bus.
3. Check the mailbox at the driver’s assigned Springfield Urban League Inc. location in the a.m. and p.m. for any updates.
4. Driver must maintain an Active School Bus Driver Permit including Annual School Bus Driver Permit including DOT Certification, Annual School Bus Driver Physical and participate in the Annual Refresher Course.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to drive well and safely, meeting all requirements of the State of Illinois Department of Transportation.
2. Must possess a CDL license and school bus (SBP) endorsement.

1. At least one year of driving experience.
2. Ability to work well with children, staff, parents, and others.
3. Ability to pass a medical examination certifying freedom from communicable diseases and illegal substances.
4. Must meet personnel and health qualifications required by the State of Illinois Department of Transportation.
5. Obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR cards.
6. Show proof of insurance required by the State of Illinois.
