What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operator 1st shift position at SPS?
In this job you will help satisfy our customers by being responsible for loading, flattening and cutting coils of steel per our customer specifications.
What are your primary responsibilities?
- You will be responsible for working with your team member to load and feed coils into the machine.
- You will adjust the machine(mill) to produce the best quality sheet of steel.
- You will load scrap for conveyance and sheet separation per production orders
- You will be printing paperwork and affixing labels to material
- You will be an integral part of inspecting the steel to ensure quality
- You will ensure that the correct amount of steel is produce per customer requirements
What are the physical & work requirements in this position?
You will be working in a yard or warehouse facility within OSHA guidelines; conditions may be heated and / or unheated, dusty and noisy;
steel-toed boots required daily
- Our Facility is a multiple shift operation. You must possess the ability to work a flexible schedule and be on-call at various times including possible weekends and holidays.
- It is a fast-paced moderately stressful, constantly changing day to day work environment
- You will need the ability to stand, walk, or be mobile for up to eight hours per shift and be capable of ascending and descending material handling equipment
- You will need to be able to lift up to 51 pounds as needed. Push, pull or carry up to 50 pounds
- Operate equipment such as forklifts, yard trucks, overhead cranes, saws and shears.
- You will be regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts or chemicals.
- You must always wear proper PPE (as described in company policy).

The right candidate must have the following items or personal qualities :
- General knowledge of plant operations (order picking, loading, processing, and receiving).
- Ability to effectively read and use a tape measure, caliper, and micrometer.
- Six to twelve months of related experience.
- High School diploma or GED.
If you have the following competencies & expertise you will stand out above the rest :
- One or more years of Mill or Leveler experience
- One year of Technical school or equivalent training or equivalent work experience
- Good computer skills
- Good people skills with and ability to deal with a variety of personalities
- 1-3 years plant floor experience
