Safety Manager 


 Job Summary

The Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring the development, implementation, and maintenance of a variety of health, safety, and environmental plans and programs to ensure the highest possible degree of safety for Spudnik’s employees, customers, and vendors.  The Safety Manager is tasked with preventing and eliminating worksite injuries by inspecting and evaluating worksites, working methods, equipment, materials, and processes.  The Safety Manager plays a key role in recommending and implementing safety changes, training, and education.  Teamwork and customer service are vital to the position as the Manager works directly and indirectly with customers, vendors, and company personnel.    The Manager will demonstrate high levels of responsibility and accountability, working effectively and efficiently at all times.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Lead and develop a team of safety professionals.
  2. Thoroughly understand and ensure that federal, state, and local laws, regulations, rules, and codes are observed; providing advice, counseling, and technical support for all compliance regulations and updates.
  3. Develop, implement, maintain, and regularly update safety policy handbook and site-specific policies required by law in areas such as hazard assessment, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, lockout/tagout, emergency action, hazard communication, and other relevant safety areas.
  4. Administer worker’s compensation program, examine and initiate claims, and control costs through effective management of medical cases.
  5. Ensure injured workers are accompanied to initial and follow-up visits to medical providers and effectively communicate relevant information (e.g. restrictions, appointment scheduling, return to work status, etc.) to appropriate parties, including supervisor and claim administrator.
  6. Establish, monitor, and maintain a reporting and investigation process for accident, injury, near-miss, and property damage situations and report findings to appropriate department managers and supervisors.
  7. Conduct periodic safety inspections on all workplace facilities, equipment, and powered industrial trucks to identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace.
  8. Play an active role in conducting investigations into employee complaints, inquiries, and suggestions on safety related issues.
  9. Maintain accurate and detailed safety, health, and compliance records and documentation, including OSHA, DEQ, and EPA reporting requirements.
  10. Plan, develop, and implement safety training sessions for new hire orientation, safety committee meetings, first responder meetings, and routine employee training.
  11. Coordinate and administer on-site controlled substance testing, including compliance with DOT testing requirements, reporting results to appropriate managers and supervisors.
  12. Identify, classify, and properly dispose of waste material, both hazardous and nonhazardous, in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, rules, and codes.
  13. Compile, analyze, and interpret safety data to advise and influence management and employees to safe working habits.

Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in safety science, occupational health, biology or related field or at least six years of related employment experience in safety, environmental, or occupational health compliance.
  2. Well-developed and demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local occupational safety, health, and transportation laws, regulations, rules, and codes (e.g. OSHA, DOT, EPA, DEQ, etc.).
  3. Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
  4. Ability to effectively organize and analyze data.
  5. Excellent communication skills including, verbal, written, and through presentation.

  1. Computer, printer, copier, scanner, fax machine, telephone, and other office equipment.
  2. Other machines and equipment specific to departmental or facility needs.

Typical Environmental Conditions

Worker is subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions and temperature extremes.  May have temperature changes due to working inside a shop.  At times noise is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.  Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places.  One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin:   Fumes, odors, dust mists, gases or poor ventilation.  There is air and or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

Salary : $67,100 - $85,000
