What are the responsibilities and job description for the Design Director, Risk position at Square?
Company Description
Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely – and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, run a busy kitchen, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. And across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow all in one place.
Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.
There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.
The Risk team works to protect the people that trust Square, by minimizing the financial risks that come with running a business. We keep our sellers safe while $25B flows through Square annually, and along the way help each other make calculated risk/reward trade offs to grow sellers, and make complicated and sometimes painful processes understandable to all.
We are looking for a Product Design Director to lead a team of multi-disciplined designers on Risk. The Risk Design team is a true differentiator for Square, leading the Risk team to delivering essential knowledge and experiences to our sellers that help them make sense of these complex situations in money movement—getting sellers their money faster and protecting them along the way. You will set and guide the vision for what design on Risk means, and partner with cross-functional leadership in product management, engineering, machine learning, data science, policy, operations, and more to instill a customer-first and experience-driven approach to all that we do on Risk to protect Square and our sellers. This role will report to the General Manager, Risk.
- Lead from a customer-first perspective, advocating for the customer and approaching problems with an experience mindset.
- Inspire others to find opportunities to improve processes to create more value in our business and our customer experience.
- Facilitate workshops, conduct research, and work cross-functionally to create a collective understanding of our tools, systems and services.
- Build relationships with leadership across Risk and strategic partners throughout Square.
- Mentor and manage a team of designer that span across Product Design, Service Design, Content Design and UX Research.
- Inspire others to apply metrics, data, design research, user testing, customer support insights, and more to inform experience decisions.
- Always think about how your work fits into the full ecosystem during all phases of the design process.
- At least 12 years of relevant professional experience in UX/UI, including at least 4 years of managerial experience.
- A portfolio of complex work (large product or feature launch, major systems update etc) on which you or your team were the primary contributor(s) from ideation through completion, and a core contributor to the vision.
- Experience leading and guiding areas outside of design (e.g. engineering, product, marketing, strategy, copy), with examples of how you had positive impact on processes, collaboration, and deliverables.
- Experience in Service Design (User Journey Mapping, Service Blueprint, Ecosystem Mapping)
Even better:
- Experience in Systems Design, Cultural Change and/or Organizational Design.
