Since then Square has been building an entire business toolkit of both hardware and software products including Square Capital, Square Terminal, Square Payroll, and more. Square’s Payment Platform provides payment facilitation and money movement services for the Square ecosystem—with a payments volume exceeding $150B per year. Our organization is building a Platform as a Product and runs like a product organization. This platform allows developers in and outside of Block to onboard businesses, accept payments across multiple channels, hold and transfer funds, and provide accounting, reconciliation, and reporting in a secure and compliant way.
We are looking for a Senior Director of Engineering, reporting to the General Manager for Payment Platform. Join us and build Square’s next generation acceptance platform—to grow globally, accelerate integration of new payment methods, and lay the foundation for crypto. In this role, you would lead 200 engineers along with their engineering leadership in delivering the payment experience from mobile, web, and in-app SDKs all the way to the low level integrations with banks and global (card) networks. You would join the Payment Platform leadership team and work with Product, Design, and Data Science to set the strategic direction for the payments business.
Responsibilities

- Influence business strategy and product vision as part of the Payment Platform leadership team

- Operator mindset: you have experience creating and implementing systems and processes to scale and support Engineering teams of at least 150 with a focus on execution and operational excellence
- Payments domain expertise and demonstrated experience operating mission-critical Tier 1 payments systems at scale
- Strong people manager: people magnet and team builder
- 10 years relevant software development and systems design experience working in backend services.
- 8 years of experience as a Software Engineering Manager or Lead; 4 years managing managers

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Zone A: USD $326,300 - USD $398,800
