Summary/Objective:
The Vessel & Terminal Superintendent directs and coordinates the operations of discharge, load, berthing and departure of assigned vessel guaranteeing quality, security, safety, and efficiency in accordance with relevant operational and technical parameters. This position serves as first line supervisor of the operations management team and is responsible for the direction and supervision of union workers. While maintaining a positive working relationship with the labor, the Superintendent is to set the standard and be held accountable for a safe and efficient operation. The Superintendent is often the only member of management interacting with labor while working a ship and must represent the interests of SSA while supervising the union labor.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Manages the availability of equipment and personnel required for timely completion of scheduled vessel operations, and that staff and equipment are fully utilized, optimize resources utilization and uptime to meet the economic performance indicators, and assist as necessary with other required tasks to turn the vessel around within specific time.
- Work closely with terminal staff to prepare department plans while determining the appropriate workforce to hire for an efficient and cost-effective completion of plan.
- Supervises union represented personnel in proper operating procedures, and as needed will counsel, discipline and/or make termination recommendations to ensure an efficient operation while working within the definitions of the labor agreement.
- Supports, monitors and trouble shoots, when necessary, terminal operating systems, ensuring data is accurate. Additional technology related duties may apply.
- Enforces productivity levels by supervising longshore workers in making multiple rounds within the terminal/vessel operation and a follow up assessment prior to shift end.
- Completes various reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries; Produces reports to respective parties within required deadlines.
- Plans, holds, and documents daily safety meetings; partnering with Area Health, Safety & Environment to understand and train longshore workers to adhere to safety procedures while implementing plans to address safety hazards.
- Ensures that all PPE is always worn and distributed for jobs that require additional PPE.
- Enforces and follows plans, requirements, and orders.
- Responsible for investigation and reporting damages and liabilities to the appropriate management and authorities.
- Responsible for learning, navigating, and adhering to all union contracts.
- Serves as a key coordinator between all parties, vessels, customers, agents, and labor.

Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management
- 3 years managing related union labor recommended
- Valid CPR certificate preferred
- Must have valid DL
- Knowledge or principles of terminal operations preferred
- Proven leadership skills.
- Experience with computerized operating systems
- Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations preferred
- Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability desired
- Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules preferred
- Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment.

Work environment:
- Must be able to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, and nights at multiple terminals
- Must be able to work in extreme outdoor temperatures of hot and cold, extremely dusty conditions and occasionally, conditions of high levels of noise.
- The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment
- The ability to drive 10%
