DIRECT HIRE: Seeking an experienced Machine Shop Managerfor an opportunity in the Portland, OR. area. The successful candidate must have the ability to oversee the daily planning and implementation of work assigned to the machine and repair shop. The position focuses on creating and implementation of work plans while meeting company and project objectives. The work involves selecting, training, and disciplining employees as well as assuring work is appropriately assigned, equipment and materials sourced, and all Local, State, Federal and Company safety regulations are met.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list is not intended to detail all aspects of the assigned work but is representative of the job’s overall responsibilities)
Plans and schedules daily production work including coordinating workflow through the machine shop, employee assignments, determination of production goals and quality standards
Creates production plans and communicates production plans and objectives to Shop supervision and programming
Meets production schedules while maintaining quality standards
Collaborates with the Project Engineering and Fabrication departments on build plans for new work (Machine stock required on weldments, pre-machining requirements for components prior to welding/forming, etc.)
Provides machining estimates for both the Sales department and Project management as required
Creates and mentors a strong safety culture with employees while following safety regulations and guidelines
Oversite and monitoring of production activities for compliance
Identifies problem areas for risk, researches and implements solutions to reduce these hazards and the potential for employee injury in the workplace
Responsible for production performance of regularly reported KPI’s
Evaluates production performance to assure goals are being met and to identify impediments to project objectives
Can adjust course of action(s) on the fly while communicating these changes to the workforce without creating additional risks to safety, quality and schedules
Conducts quality assurance during production and implements actions to remedy identified problems
Institutes production changes to maximize quality while containing costs
Participates in the hiring and selection of employees; provides training and mentors/ development of employees in the areas of safety, quality and production
Monitors and evaluates employee performance and leads the disciplining of employee as required with close communication with Human Resources
Provides feedback to the Project Engineering team to assist in the development of shop drawings
Primary liaison between the Project Manager and working crews regarding communications relative to performance on safety, quality, budget and schedule
Coordinates with support services personnel to ensure inventory, parts, material and other required items are available to support work
Ensures all machine shop personnel are in compliance with the Quality Management System they are working under. (AS9100, ISO 9001, NQA-1, etc.)
Coordinates the maintenance of equipment and tooling
Maintains tooling and supply and consumables inventory to meet production demands
JOB SCOPE: Through subordinate supervisors and leads, the position has responsibility for all machine shop employees. The individual works with considerable independence following the guidelines and goals identified by the Sr. Production Manager- Machining, Assembly, and Metrology in order to achieve production goals and benchmarks. He/she has the ability to influence and change existing protocols. Failure to meet deadlines could result in loss of business. Rework and material costs overruns are likely if unable to fulfill the requirements of the job.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Responsible for all craft, skilled and general laborers within the machine shop
He/she may be responsible for as many as 30 to 40 team members at a given time spread across multiple projects of differing scope
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
Daily interaction with shop personnel, project managers and other customer representatives is critical
The ability to sort through required actions vs. possible/desired actions is a must
Finding a way to balance the level of upcoming work against additional scope being added is crucial
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Prior machine shop Supervisor and mechanical assembly background is required
Proficient with Master Cam X7 and above for machine programming
Proficient with SolidWorks version 2012 and above
Experience with Fanuc and Siemens Machine controllers
Understands and can properly apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5-1994 and newer)
Experienced with machining carbon, stainless, and aluminum materials
Experienced with machining weldments and castings
Experienced with working under multiple quality management systems (ISO 9001/ AS9100/ NQA-1)
Solid knowledge of tooling selection for various materials
Designs fixtures for machining and assembly
Estimation experience for turning, milling and assembly
Understands limits/fits (ANSI B4.1)
Strong set up experience on lathes and mills
Previous large part / complex geometry machining experience preferred
Monitors and maintains machining budgets
Can create a routine machine maintenance program and troubleshoot machinery
Can coach/mentor/train new machinists, millwrights and mechanics
Ability to be a team player and create a positive work environment
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or Equivalent, (Associates Degree a plus, not essential)
Minimum 5 Years machine shop management experience
Minimum 5 years of experience in a supervisory capacity with increasing levels of responsibilities
PHYSICAL DEMANDS. Use of tools requires manual dexterity and fine motor movement. The incumbent of this position is required to stand for extensive periods of time, in hot or cold environments as needed to oversee the work and assure production goals are met. Must also be able to work long hours, travel via various modes of transportation, and work any day of the week at any time of the day as required to meet customer needs, business objectives and to achieve delivery of service deadlines. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment for this job is demanding and potentially hazardous due to work in a production yard. The environment contains large hazardous equipment. The nature of the work involves working in extremes of temperature. Some of the work is performed within an office setting.
