Job Summary About the Role
Assist with enhancing the physical appearance and experience of the Park District for residents and visitors to our parks and
facilities.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
This position is well suited for someone with a pleasant personality. Must be reliable and show initiative, tact, and
productivity. Must demonstrate a willingness to be trained and become proficient in the safe operation of equipment and
tools that include the wood chipper, chainsaw, grounds equipment, vehicles, mowers and pruning tools.
Need to Have: High school graduate. Must be 18 years old. Horticulture, tree care and chainsaw experience are
preferred. A valid State driver's license is necessary.
Essential Functions of the Position
Park District Competencies
- Follow all departmental safety rules that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of Park Districts safety and risk management program.
Work cooperatively and collaboratively with residents, colleagues, the public, PDRMA and other agencies or organizations as delegated.
Recommends improvements and efficiencies to better accomplish individual and district goals in the best interests of the St. Charles Park District community.
Comply with park district policies and administrative procedures.
Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent of Parks, the Assistant Superintendent of Parks and the
Arborist, the Arborist Assistant shall complete his/her assigned duties to the best of his/her abilities, and be ever mindful
of the best interests of the St. Charles Park District and of fellow employees. This position requires extensive knowledge
and ability to:
- Assist the full time Arborist in the completion of assigned duties that may include removing trees, clearing brush, pruning branches, raking turf and beds and other related duties as assigned under the supervision of the Arborist.
- Act as the bucket truck spotter and ground safety monitor to help ensure the safety of the tree crew, other park district employees and park visitors.
- Maintain a safe worksite for park visitors by identifying and removing hazards, providing advance warning to visitors in close proximity to worksite, and worksite cleanup as directed so that the site is left safe for park visitors.
- Assist with the training and supervision of seasonal employees at worksites as assigned by the Arborist.
- The ability to be physically strong enough to do some lifting.
- The ability to effectively maintain assigned areas and facilities as directed by Supervisory personnel.
- The ability to be responsible to the Superintendent of Parks, Assistant Superintendents of Parks, the Arborist and any other supervisor as assigned.
- The ability to willingly work over and above required daily hours when necessary.
- The ability to operate motor equipment as needed or required.
- The ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously with the general public and cooperating agencies, as well as fellow employees.
- The ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- The ability to follow all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed and support all aspects of the Park District's safety program
Marginal Functions of the Position or Role
- Assist with snow removal and ice rink maintenance.
- Assist the Horticulture and Naturalist crews as assigned.
- Assist with special events.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Assist with building maintenance.
