- Competent in computer and technology usage
- Ability to successfully complete the National Library of Congress Braille Certification Program within 3 years
- Experience or training in the field of education
- Proven ability to work well with children
- Knowledge and use of literary and Nemeth braille
- Experience working with students with academic needs
- Understands and assists in the implementation and follow through of the student’s educational plan developed through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process; works to maximize students’ independence
- Assists in providing literary access including braille/large print/auditory access, student specific books, and materials specific to students with visual impairments
- Under the direction of the COMS, supports and promotes the learning of skills necessary for students to travel safely and efficiently in a variety of environments
- Reads, writes, and transcribes in braille; operates a computer with specialized braille software
- Assists students in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment such as braillers, keyboarding equipment, electronic scanners, and personal computers
- Consults with classroom teachers and TBVI to assist in providing accurate, timely and appropriate adapted materials
- Assists in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment
- Under the guidance of the TBVI, creates curriculum adaptations including tactile graphic production, enlargements, photo manipulation, and tactile components
- Implements any necessary updates in computer technology as it applies to braille and large print production
- Uses acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly
- Keeps the instructional staff (VI, O&M, and others) informed of any special needs or concerns of individual students
- Attends workshops and in-service training sessions as necessary and/or as directed
- Assists with organization of materials to promote student independence
- Frequent: walking, standing, bending, sitting, hearing, talking, and seeing

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Teacher(s) for Blind/Visually Impaired (TBVI) and Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist(s) (COMS), the Vision Support Specialist (VSS) assists in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students with visual impairments by facilitating instruction and interaction with the environment and acting as a bridge to independence.
SALARY:
$18.23/hr-$23.41/hr (dependent on qualifications and experience)
