Department: Surgery, Endoscopy, Post Anesthesia Care
Position: Surgical Assistant
Shift: Days
Schedule Requirement: 40 hours per week & some on-call may be required
Requirements: Must be enrolled in or have completed a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Surgical First Assistant (SFA) program. Must obtain Surgical Assistant certification by National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) within two years of entering Surgical Assistant role, PLUS at least 1 year clinical experience as a Certified Surgical Technician.
Plusses: Experience as a Surgical Assistant/First Assistant in all surgical specialties. Surgical Assistant teaching/training experience.
Duty Description: Under the supervision of the surgeon, assists the surgeon during surgical procedures with tissue dissection and retraction, maintenance of hemostasis, tissue handling, and all layers of wound closure during surgical procedures. Prepares for surgical procedures by anticipating and obtaining necessary supplies, instruments, and equipment. Applies technical skills and scientific principles as a Surgical Assistant.
