St. John’s United Methodist Church, Albuquerque, NM
POSITION TITLE: Director of Discipleship and Neighborhood Engagement
MINISTRY OR DEPARTMENT: Christian Formation
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part Time (20 Hours/Week)
REPORTS TO: Senior Pastor and Staff-Parish Relations Committee
EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt
Essential Job Duties:
1. Create an inclusive and affirming ministry environment at St. John’s that encourages all persons in the congregation to grow in their commitment to faith development, service for others, and discipleship using a Wesleyan model.
2. Recruit, train, and support leaders for small groups, Bible studies, service groups, and justice ministries for congregational participation.
3. Identify newcomers at the church and help them integrate into the community.
4. Engage and liaison with non-profits, non-governmental organizations, other churches, schools, etc. for partnership and cooperation in ministry.
5. Oversee and support the Director of Children and Family Ministries in the implementation of programing for children and families.
6. Work in coordination with the Senior Pastor and lay-leadership to identify and implement new areas of ministry and witness in the local community.
7. Support and resource small group leaders in selecting books and curriculum.
8. Know and adhere to the St. John’s UMC Safe Sanctuaries Policy including a criminal background check.
9. Coordinate communication with Office Administrator and other staff on related ministries.
10. Attend staff meetings (every other Tuesday morning) and Church Council meetings (one Thursday evening/month).
Qualifications:
1. A demonstrated commitment to nurturing and inviting persons to deepen their faith and rooted in a personal commitment to discipleship and professed faith in Jesus Christ.
2. Education: A bachelor’s degree or higher degree in an applicable field such as Christian Education, Christian Theology, or Community Development.
3. Familiarity and ability to communicate Christian theology in the Wesleyan tradition, and understanding of United Methodist approaches to ministry.
4. Ability to work with others on a church staff to coordinate and cooperate in program and ministry development.
5. Two years experience in a church ministry or community development setting preferred.
6. Availability to work non-traditional hours such as evenings or weekends.
7. Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Church Community Builder software preferred.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $23.00 per hour
