Hydrologist II, IV, or Senior Engineer Scientist

Bureau of Groundwater Modeling and Assessment 


Three positions may be filled from this applicant pool.

 

Job Summary: This is independent hydrologic work contributing to the development and application of groundwater flow models to support the development of water resource management strategies, regulatory evaluation and minimum flows and levels assessment.

 

Job duties include:

 

Hydrologist II 

  • Identifies and prepares hydrologic and hydrogeologic data required to develop model input data sets from available sources. This includes the development of digital data from non-digital data sources, and transformation of GIS and time series data into formats consistent with numerical model formats. Performs statistical and time series analysis on hydrologic data to support groundwater model development and application.  
  • Assists senior modeling staff with developing and utilizing numerical groundwater flow models in a manner which supports other programs including water supply planning, water use permitting, and minimum flows and levels. 
  •  Assists in preparing technical reports and other program related tasks.
  • Attends training classes and seminars to stay abreast of the advances in the science of hydrology and hydrogeology. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Hydrologist IV

  • Performs MODFLOW groundwater modeling and may serve as a project lead for the assigned projects.
  • Utilizes numerical groundwater models to support other programs including water supply planning, water use permitting, and minimum flows and levels. 
  • Collaborates with staff on refinements and development of regional groundwater models. This includes preparing written documentation of simulation results, presentation of those results to project team members and clients, and mentoring staff in the use and application of modeling tools.
  • Attends training classes, seminars, and reviews current literature to stay abreast of the advances in the science of hydrology and hydrogeology; provides guidance to other hydrologists in area of special knowledge and expertise. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Senior Engineer Scientist 

  • Performs MODFLOW groundwater modeling and serves as a project lead for the assigned projects.
  • Develops and utilizes numerical groundwater models to support other programs including water supply planning, water use permitting, and minimum flows and levels. 
  • Collaborates with staff on refinements and development of regional groundwater models. This includes preparing written documentation of simulation results, presentation of those results to project team members and clients, and mentoring staff in the use and application of modeling tools.
  • Assists in improving existing processes and developing new methodologies and writes computer programs including Python or R and applies GIS techniques for groundwater modeling and assessment.
  • Coordinates interdepartmental or interdivisional project work as needed for specified projects.
  • Prepares technical reports, professional papers, and memoranda on work completed.
  • Attends training classes, seminars, and reviews current literature to stay abreast of the advances in the science of hydrology and hydrogeology; provides guidance to other hydrologists in area of special knowledge and expertise. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Hydrologist II requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, hydrology, engineering or related field and one-year professional experience in geology, hydrology, or related field.

 

Hydrologist IV requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, hydrology, hydrogeology or related field and five years of experience in hydrology or hydrogeology; or registration with the State of Florida as a professional geologist or professional engineer.

 

Senior Engineer Scientist requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental, civil, hydraulic, agricultural or water resource engineering, seven years of experience directly related to the field in which the position is assigned.

 

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in environmental, civil, hydraulic, agricultural or

water resource engineering can substitute for one year of the required experience.

 

A doctorate from an accredited college or university in environmental, civil, hydraulic, agricultural or water

resource engineering can substitute for two years of the required experience.

 

Experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

 

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

Mostly office environment sitting at a desk and operating a personal computer to produce work products with some field visits as required.

 

Periodic field visits:

Applicant must have ability to endure outdoor environments in uncomfortable temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.

 

Licenses:

Requires a valid Florida driver license or obtain within six months of employment.

 

Travel:

Requires travel to attend off-site meetings, sometimes outside of normal business hours including overnight. Ability to drive oneself to and from meetings.  

 

Additional Details:

Starting Salary Range:  

Hydrologist II: $50,980.00 - $63,710.40

Hydrologist IV: $64,230.40 - $83,491.20

Senior Engineer Scientist: $73,528.00 - $95,596.80

Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience.
