The Environmental Health Laboratory (EHL) is looking to fill several Chemist I openings. A Chemist I support the assessment of health by diagnosing and investigating health problems and health hazards in the community. EHL performs a variety of testing including radiochemistry, aeroallergen, environmental lead, microbiology, and clinical.
This is an entry level Chemist position. EHL has open positions available in the Environmental Radiochemistry and Clinical Sections.
The position will be located at one of the two laboratory locations.

Maintaining confidentiality of information including, but not limited to: Patient/client test results, specimen chain of custody, laboratory reports, laboratory records, patient information as required by state and federal laws.

Following laboratory procedures/policies as applicable to job duties.
Prepares reagents necessary to perform daily analyses.
Operates and calibrates laboratory instruments and equipment to produce accurate and legally defensible results for outside parties and agencies.
Maintains accurate documentation and quality control to satisfy requirements set by laboratory certifications.
Performs calculations and apply statistical methods to raw data to produce accurate results for laboratory reports.
Prepares control charts, graphs and other quality assurance activities to meet laboratory standards and regulatory agency requirements.
Other duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED (Vary depending on lab section): Gas proportional counters, liquid scintillation counter, ICP-MS, chemical clinical analyzers, immunoassay clinical analyzer, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, polymerase chain reaction, pipettors, microscopes, centrifuges, hotplates, vortex mixers, water baths, incubators, balances, and vacuum pumps.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Standing or sitting for long periods, repetitive hand and wrist movements, and exposure to biohazard, chemicals and other general laboratory hazards.Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or a related field and two years related laboratory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County. Additionally, new employees will have 30 calendar days, after their first day of employment, to attest to their COVID-19 vaccination status. Instructions on how to submit this attestation will be provided once employment has begun. County employees are not required to be fully vaccinated, but those who are not fully vaccinated must submit to weekly COVID-19 testing until they are fully vaccinated or St. Louis County geographically reaches a 70% vaccination rate and a moderate transmission level of COVID-19 as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
