Corrections Officers are responsible for maintaining the safety, custody, security, and control of inmates at all levels of security in all environments, including: indirect or direct supervision, prisoner processing, and work release.
 
Positions are assigned to the Justice Center located in Clayton and are full time. This is a 24/7 operation; employees may work day, evening, or night shifts.  Visit the Justice Services website for detailed information relating to the management of the St. Louis County Justice Center.

Maintaining order and discipline within the housing units.

Supervising, escorting, and transporting inmates.

Coordinating and monitoring daily activities of inmates.

Patrolling and inspecting housing units and inmate cells.

Conducting scheduled and random searches of inmates and assigned areas to maintain a safe and secure environment.

Maintaining an appropriate record of daily activities, disciplinary action, inmate movements, and services provided.  Entering the information into a computerized system.

Enforcing rules and regulations to ensure adherence to policy and defined procedures.

Assisting fellow officers.

Working to achieve the highest level of correlation to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the facility.

Performing such additional duties as may properly be required of a position in this job class, with the required abilities and under the indicated working conditions and environment.

Required to work mandatory overtime and to work on any shift as needed.  Assists subordinate officers with difficult public contacts and intervenes to resolve disputes or other problems.

Physical Requirements: Extensive standing, walking, climbing stairs at least eight times daily per shift, using and lifting emergency equipment (fire extinguisher, AED, pepper spray, taser etc), bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, reaching overhead, continuously wearing an equipment belt, using a breathing apparatus, listening for possible disturbances, observation of required areas.

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent required.  
  • Must be 19 years of age.
  • Clear police record.*
 


*Free of felony convictions and A Misdemeanors have to be approved for hire by the Director of Justice Services.

The selection procedure will include but is not limited to the following:
  1. Satisfactory completion of an employment application.
  2. Selection for the interview based on minimum qualifications from the employment application.
  3. Passing the interview based on a qualifying score determined by the Division of Personnel.
  4. Applicants passing the interview will be placed on the eligible list.  The Division of Personnel will certify the top candidates from the eligible list to the Department of Justice Services for further consideration.  Your name will remain on the eligible list for up to two years.
All applicants conditionally offered a position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be borne by the County.
