- Assist the Environmental Resource Specialist as needed to develop, manage, maintain, and interpret natural areas in the park system. Develops resource management plans and implements conservation tasks.
- Assist with the planting and re-construction of prairies, wetlands, savannas, and woodlands. Must have a thorough knowledge of site preparation, planting techniques, and management of all natural re-construction projects.
- Control and or eradicate invasive plant species throughout the park system by means of herbicide use, cutting, pulling, and mowing.
- Exercise safe and proper use of pesticides including storage, mixing, handling, applying, disposal, and hauling of chemicals.
- Assist with prescribed burns.
- Work with volunteer groups which may include weekend duties.
- Work independently with minimal supervision or direction.
- Ability to work with other land organizations, individuals, and volunteers to implement conservation best management practices.
- Perform such additional duties as may properly be required or assigned.
Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural History, Environmental Science, Wildlife Conservation & Management, Natural Resource Management or related field.
Knowledge of Missouri flora and fauna and/or Midwest ecosystems is necessary.
Candidates must possess a valid Driver's License.
- Identify native and invasive species in natural areas. Determine the best management tasks to improve the natural quality of the site.
- Must have a working knowledge of Missouri natural systems. Ability to develop plans for resource re-construction which could include native seed sources, specific plant species, quantities, and costs.
- Conduct field sampling, prepare environmental analyses, and report field conditions to supervisor. Provides a report of existing natural conditions and future tasks to improve those conditions.
- Knowledge of tree planting to support restoration efforts.
- Participate in native seed collection, seed processing and seeding.
- Use various tools of the trade, including but not limited to trucks, tractors, mowers, chain saws, line trimmers, brush cutters, and hand tools.
- Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and efficient working order.
- Perform all job tasks in compliance with the Parks Department.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships throughout the Parks Department.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and concisely in a professional manner. May be called upon to make a verbal presentation or to write an article for distribution.
- Ability to use standard office equipment.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Work is primarily performed outdoors under various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, or ice.
- Duties will be performed in close proximity to the general public and the employee may have frequent interactions with park visitors.
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee may be exposed to hazardous flora and fauna (e.g. poison ivy, biting/stinging insects, ticks & chiggers) and chemicals (e.g. cleaning supplies, herbicides/pesticides, and gasoline/oil).
- The employee may also be exposed to machinery with moving mechanical parts and high noise levels.
- Normal duties may include stooping, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Prolonged standing or walking, often on unpaved/uneven terrain, will be frequent.
- The employee may regularly handle and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Use of personal protective equipment will be required based on job specific tasks. This may include, but is not limited to, the following items: work boots, protective gloves, safety goggles or glasses, chaps, earplugs or ear covers, reflective vest or hi-vis shirt, respirators or masks and helmets.
- The work environment characteristics and physical demands described above are representative of those an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
