Description:
Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, the Patient Care Assistant is responsible for performing patient care in accordance with established Nursing Standards and Hospital Policies. This position is a non-licensed/non-certified staff member authorized to provide patients with basic care, non-medicinal comfort measures and activities of daily living. They may also be assigned other duties that are not direct patient care such as re-stocking supplies on the division to meet specified essential nursing division needs. They will perform duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with St. Luke’s mission and values.

Assist patients with mobility needs
- patient transfers
- turn and reposition in bed
- assist patient to bathroom/commode/up to chair
- assist with ambulation
- transport patients to tests in other hospital locations
- Utilize “lift equipment“ when it is appropriate, in a safe manner

Perform patient care activities to include, but not limited to:
- skin care, oral hygiene, and personal hygiene
- provides bedpan or urinal as needed
- weigh patient
- obtain/serve oral fluids and nourishments, record intake
- feed patients when needed/assist with ordering meals when needed
- collects meal tray and place in Food & Nutrition cart
- obtain patient vital signs (temp, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, SAO2 and pain level) as ordered
- empty Foley catheters, drains and ostomy bags, record output
- assist with postmortem care
- respond to patient call lights
- document patient care information as directed
- restocks rooms & isolation equipment
- “Sit” with patient requiring 1:1 monitoring (Suicide or extremely confused patient)
- Transport supplies to other departments, when necessary, primarily if tube system is down
- Act as a “runner” to retrieve or transport supplies during Code Blue or other emergency situations
- Assist in keeping the environment clean and free of clutter.
- Update white boards
- Program “responder”
- Perform other work duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Successful completion of orientation classes as deemed by Clinical Education.
- Successful completion of Basic Life Support (CPR) with renewal required every two years.
- Verbal and cognitive ability.
- May be required to rotate shifts because of hospital's 24 hour per day 7 days a week operation. May be required to work on other patient care units as needed.
- Able to address specific age-related needs of the patient.
- Maintain a clean & safe environment.
- Annual completion related to PCA competency developed by division managers and Clinical Education.
- Annual completion of mandatory programs in Care Learning.
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
