Responsible for planning, implementing, organizing and evaluating policies, practices, and services of the Nursing Department, in collaboration with the Director of Nursing. Supervises nursing staff. Participates in activities related to general operations of unit and department. Supports Hospital's mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting agency standards, and obtaining appropriate certification.
JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Assists AVP in analyzing and evaluating department programs, policies and procedures.
- Develops and implements systems for documentation necessary to maintain accountability and compliance with external regulations and internal standards.
- Assists AVP in establishing standards, work methods and work schedules of department employees.
- Provides direction to nursing staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care.
- Provides immediate feedback to staff when opportunities for improvement and enhancement of their professional growth and development are observed. Performs coaching/disciplinary action as necessary in accordance to CBA and collaboration with HR.
- Maintains adequate staffing levels by scheduling and providing coverage as needed. Participates with ADN/AVP in interviewing, selecting and orienting new personnel in accordance with facility policies, work standards, methods and schedules.
- Assists AVP in preparing department budget and maintains budget as established.
- Provides adequate opportunity for staff training and education. In conjunction with DNS, ensures that staff meet mandatory and continuing education requirements.
- Coordinates and manages the unit/department daily workload. Ensures appropriate assignments.
- Conducts employee performance evaluations according to defined schedule.
- Participates in short and intermediate planning for the unit/department. Links department goals, budget and activities to strategic planning with the AVP.
- Ensures customer friendly services. Identifies trends/potential problems and takes appropriate action.
- Submits written reports within established time frames.
- Ensures that the department goals, procedures and practices foster a therapeutic environment.
- Collaborates with the ADNs and other department managers/care givers in planning for coordinated services to the patients.
- Recommends changes to the physical plant that are necessary for enhanced patient services and regulatory compliance to the AVP.
- Shares accountability for the clinical practice of nursing in accordance with professional, facility and regulatory standards.
- Participates in assessing staff skill competency.
- Performs all duties of a Registered Professional Nurse.
- Maintains adequate patient care supplies for unit.
- Ensures implementation of interdisciplinary team goals and interventions for the residents.
- Monitors medication administration system, investigates events and develops corrective action plans as needed.
- Maintains and recommends changes in physical unit environment to ensure a well organized, safe environment.
- Collaborates with education coordinator to oversee orientation program for new employees and evaluates progress of the new staff assigned to unit.
- Participates in the facility's and department's quality improvement program.
- Participates in Department of Health surveys.
- Acts as a member of interdisciplinary team.
Formal education required:
Associates Degree in Nursing required; Bachelors in Nursing preferred
Current NYS RN License
ACLS, PALS and BLS certification required
Previous experience required:
Minimum 3 years nursing. Two years supervisory experience preferred. Demonstrated leadership skills.
