St. Thomas' Preschool in Owings Mills serves children ages 2 - Kindergarten. We are looking for qualified Preschool Teachers to implement our play-based program using our classrooms and extensive outdoor play spaces. Head Teacher: Qualifications / Requirements
- 4-year degree in Early Childhood Education, Preschool Teaching Certificate or alternative acceptable to the Maryland State Department of Education. (90-hour Certificate)
- CPR/First Aid Certification is required - training offered to teachers in August
- Experience teaching Pre-School children.
- Ability to constructively direct the behavior of young children.
- Evidence of emotional maturity and stability.
- Evidence of sufficient security and judgment to handle crisis situations and use supervision constructively.
- Physical stamina is relative to relating to young children.
- Ability to recognize and record significant behavior.
- Evidence of warm, easy-going personality and relaxed friendly manner.
- Evidence of a sense of humor and creativity.
- Ability to use App software for student documentation and parent communication - training will be provided.
- Completion of 12 Professional Development credits per school year. Approval of coursework by Office of Childcare. St. Thomas’ Preschool will provide full financial reimbursement / payment for coursework. Can be completed through in-person classes, workshop, or online certified classes.
Head Teacher: Job Description
- The head teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate program for her classroom. Ideas will emerge as she learns her class’s strengths and weaknesses as well as their interests. Teachers will have a written plan for the week which shall be amended in writing as the plans evolve taking into account the input of the children. This will be turned into the Director at week’s end and shall be kept in your class binder.
- Teachers should maintain a safe and healthy environment, arrange the classroom attractively, and keep equipment and materials in good order. This includes the set up of cubbies for children and mailboxes for parents.
- Assume responsibility for supervision of all activities to ensure the well-being of each child.
- Supervise assistants and volunteers in your classroom.
- Prepare and maintain all materials necessary to your program. Help maintain materials in common areas.
- Communicate regularly with parents about classroom activities. With a weekly correspondence through email or newsletter.
- Organize a conference with all parents at least once per year to inform them about their child's health, progress and behavior. A written report outlining this conference will be placed in the child's file. Parents should feel that teachers are non-judgmental and that all exchanges will be confidential.
- Attend faculty meetings.

Assistant Teacher: Job Description
- Assisting in the planning and implementation of daily activities for the children under the supervision of the Teacher.
- Preparing educational materials required for daily activities under the supervision of the Head Teacher.
- Assisting in maintaining an orderly physical environment, keeping equipment and materials in good condition, and keeping storage areas, inside and outside, orderly.
- Assisting the supervision of all activities to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of each child in the group.
- Encouraging children to use available materials in an individual and creative way.
- Preparation, set-up to clean-up for snack.
- Assisting in observing, recording and reporting significant individual and group behavior as directed by the Head Teacher.
- Relating to parents in ways that are supportive to the Head Teacher. Communication with parents relating to problems is the responsibility of the Head Teacher.
- Assuming responsibility for the classroom and program in the absence of the Head Teacher.
- Assuming other related duties when requested by the Director.
- Attending faculty meetings and parent meetings and contributing to those meetings.
- Assisting the Head Teacher in setting up the classroom in the week, prior to starting school.
