Head of Marketing and Engagement
As Head of Marketing & Engagement for the American Institute of Physics (AIP), you will continue our journey to centralize a robust marketing and engagement function and drive the marketing strategy of our portfolio of programs, products, and services, including FYI, Physics Today, scholarships, awards, and our foundation work. Reporting to the Chief Content Officer, you will lead a talented team of 3 direct (Director of Visual Experience, Media Services Director, and Internal Communications Manager) and 11 indirect reports.

The right person for this role will possess expertise in all forms of marketplace communications (traditional, social, events, PR, internal comms) and proactively represent the marketing function with key internal and external audiences (including the EMT and AIP Member Societies). This is a unique opportunity to establish a new level of coordinated marketing to enhance and amplify AIP’s portfolio. Your work will support the success of AIP’s Member Societies and our shared goal of advancing the physical sciences in research, the economy, education, and society.
How You’ll Make an Impact
We have recently migrated to a new customer data platform (Blueconic) and will look to your expertise in data and market analysis to build a comprehensive marketing strategy with segmented campaigns that further AIP’s strategic goals. Within the first year, you will:
- Work with leaders and staff at AIP to ensure all departments understand the marketing strategy, are well-supported by the marketing team in reaching their goals, and embrace the value of marketing toward AIP’s future growth. Develop creative briefs outlining objectives, target audiences, key messages, and campaign goals to guide internal teams.
- Leverage the data to better understand our audiences and develop customer profiles. Guide staff on how to use the data to map out and improve our programs and services, ensuring AIP provides the scientific community with relevant, meaningful, and useful tools.
- Represent the face of AIP’s marketing to external stakeholders to ensure buy-in and support.
Work Environment, Salary, and Benefits
- AIP embraces a flexible hybrid work environment to balance in-person collaborative work with remote work. Employees are required to reside in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC.
- The budgeted salary for this position is up to $150K - $180K with a comprehensive benefits package, including 25 days of PTO, medical/dental/vision coverage, an annual retirement contribution of 10% of base pay, tuition assistance, commuter benefits, and more.

Responsibilities
- Lead the development, management, centralization, and execution of marketing and communications strategies for all AIP programs, products, and services.
- Provide strategic guidance, coordination, and oversight for our marketing and communications team leaders and audience data and intelligence unit.
- Analyze market conditions and leverage market research (among AIP’s Member Societies, their members, and the broader public as needed) to inform marketing strategies and recommendations.
- Identify and pursue opportunities to promote AIP programs, products, and services through a variety of communications verticals: web, print, social, and digital.
- Provide production management expertise by involving stakeholders and establishing consensus on messaging, collateral, and timing of campaigns and other promotional efforts.
- Manage relationships with existing AIP vendors and identify needs for new outside resources; manage contracts and deliverables.
- Develop and monitor AIP’s marketing and communications budget.
- In collaboration with the Federation Office, plan and manage exhibits at major society meetings, including developing messaging, planning activities, distributing materials, and assessing outcomes.
- Provide marketing and communications expertise and support to Member Societies as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required (advanced degree preferred), and at least 10 years of professional marketing experience, including at least 5 years leading brand management, marketing, communications, social media, and/or public relations activities.
- Demonstrated experience in successful marketing strategy and team leadership with advanced skill in audience segmentation and marketing analytics, traditional, digital, and social media, and marketing automation.
- Demonstrated experience with creative development and an understanding of all current and emerging marketing methods and tactics to reach respective targets.
- An understanding of the scientific community of researchers and/or communicators in academia, government, and commercial organizations is a plus.
