Associate Director of Graduate & Undergraduate Programs
The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 23 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university’s largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day.
The McCoy Family Center for Ethics in Society seeks to hire an Associate Director of Graduate & Undergraduate Programs (APP2) to lead and develop an expanding set of initiatives at the Center that broaden its reach across campus and beyond. The McCoy Center is home to a diverse and growing portfolio of initiatives. These include an undergraduate honors program, ethics-focused classes, fellowships on and off campus, research collaborations, curricular endeavors, and public events with renowned speakers. Through these efforts, the Center is committed to bringing ethical reflection to bear on important social problems through research, teaching, and public engagement.
The Associate Director of Graduate & Undergraduate Programs (ADGUP) will have a leadership role at the Center and will be responsible for directing existing core programs for Undergraduate and Graduate students, and for designing and implementing new initiatives and partnerships with multiple stakeholders throughout the University and with external partners. The ADGUP will significantly influence the Center’s core student offerings by leading fellowship programs, campus events, and extracurricular opportunities.
The ADGUP must have exceptional networking skills as the position requires creating and sustaining relationships with departments and centers across campus, including academic, administrative, and student organizations. The ADGUP is expected to connect with faculty, students, and professional staff across Stanford and at other institutions to determine needs and opportunities, and to design responsive new programs for students that encourage active engagement with ethics. The ideal candidate will have a PhD with expertise in ethics, a record of creating and leading interdisciplinary academic programming for students, and the ability to initiate and sustain collaborations with diverse stakeholders.
The ADGUP will report directly to the Executive Director and will directly manage and mentor Center student services staff and graduate and undergraduate student assistants.
Specific job duties include: direct all graduate programming, manage grant opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students, contribute to assessing and revising the Center’s undergraduate degree offerings, lead partnerships with student groups, teach and lead workshops for undergraduate and graduate students, build a university community of practice around ethically-engaged scholarship, and strengthen partnerships that connect the Center’s work with major university initiatives and the undergraduate curriculum.
