Stanford Libraries Preservation Department manages the long-term preservation of analog library collections. The department is dedicated to promoting a culture of preservation throughout Stanford Libraries. We support teaching and research by connecting library staff to our staff, our services, and our resources. We preserve library materials at every stage of the collection lifecycle through a robust program of preventive and collection care, conservation services and preservation education. Through the complementary teamwork of two units, Collection Care and Conservation Services, the Preservation department stabilizes, repairs, houses, and prepares analog library collections for storage, use, digitization, and exhibition. As one of five departments in Technical and Access Services, Preservation works closely with units across the library organization to manage the thoughtful stewardship of library resources.

About the Position:


The Collection Care Lead coordinates the bindery and housing workflow for circulating collections, manages supplies ordering and payments, and assists with core collection preservation functions. In this position you will manage all aspects of commercial bindery operations, including the supervision of two Bindery Specialists, tracking shipments, monitoring expenditures, and compiling statistics. You will be the primary contact for bindery and housing operations, working with external vendors and across the library organization. As an integral member of a dynamic team, you will work closely with colleagues in Collection Care and Conservation Services to assess and address the preservation needs for Stanford Libraries analog collections. We are seeking someone with excellent interpersonal and communication skills who can effectively answer questions and resolve issues in a timely manner. The primary work location is on the Stanford main campus but the position may work 8-16 hours a month at the Stanford Redwood City campus.


CORE DUTIES:

Bindery and collection housing
  • Coordinates bindery and collection housing workflows.
  • Tracks and resolves bindery shipment and production issues.
  • Assesses and sorts circulating collections for bindery, housing, or repair in consultation with the Collection Care Specialist.
  • Serves as the department liaison for branch libraries and the commercial bindery, addressing questions on bindery and housing procedures, policies, and workflow.
  • Monitors bindery expenditures and processes bindery invoices.
  • Compiles and reports detailed bindery and collection housing statistics.
  • Creates and maintains documentation for bindery and collection housing operations.
  • Coordinates bindery and housing projects with departments throughout Stanford Libraries, external vendors, and contract service providers.
  • Trains library staff in assessment of bindery and collection housing needs.
  • Works with ABLE bindery system, FOLIO ILS, and Gunnar Computerized Mat Cutting machine.
  • As needed, assists with collection housing and bindery preparation and receiving activities
  • Other duties as assigned.
Administrative
  • Orders supplies for the Preservation department.
  • Processes department purchasing card transactions.
  • Processes purchase orders and invoices.
  • Researches and resolves payment and supplies ordering issues.
  • Serves as Time Leave Administrator, reviewing and approving staff timecards.
Preservation
  • Assists with quarantine of collection items.
  • Assists with collection emergency response.
  • Assists with preservation assessments of housing, shelving, and storage of collections.
Supervision
  • Supervises, recruits, trains, and evaluates staff

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Two-year college degree plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of complex, information systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience using judgment and initiative to analyze and recommend new procedures.
Other Relevant Knowledge Skills and Abilities May Include:

  • Substantial knowledge of preservation principles and practices.
  • Familiarity with commercial library binding processes and procedures.
  • Able to apply judgment in choosing procedures and evaluating alternatives.
  • Knowledge of basic project management processes and procedures.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheets, tracking systems, and communication software
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements*:


  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 70 pounds.

Working Conditions:

May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust and mold; work extended hours, evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $33.17 to $36.54 per Hour. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
