Your Opportunity
Stantec’s environmental services group is seeking a mid-level Environmental Scientist/Arborist to provide environmental field surveys, reporting, and permitting support for our clients in the transportation, renewable energy, electric transmission, and other business sectors. The selected candidate will lead tasks associated with environmental impact analysis, wetland, stream, forest, and vegetation assessments/monitoring, natural resources and energy project environmental permitting, and agency coordination for and/or conducting endangered species surveys across the eastern U.S.
As an Environmental Scientist/Arborist, you will work in a highly dynamic team environment with other biologists/ecologists/water resource specialists, ecosystem restoration engineers, NEPA specialists, environmental planners, and regulatory experts. This position will include opportunities for both field and office work; it may also involve travel and several days in the field and away from home.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Vegetation inventories/monitoring
- Landscape Design and oversight for restoration projects, forest conservation projects, and vegetation management plans required for project permitting
- Background research and data reviews
- Environmental permit applications including MD Forest Conservation and Section 404/401
- GPS data collection and mapping support
- ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications
- Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data
- Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review
- Build and maintain productive professional and personal networking relationships within their technical team and Business Center
- Assist with project management duties
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Experience leading field, reporting, and permitting efforts
- An interest in environmental permitting, ecosystems, natural resource assessments and conservation, and the outdoors is essential
- Strong understanding of forestry, ecology, native plant landscape and invasive species management
- The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to their own and the team's safety is important
- A positive attitude in all working conditions is key
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional MS Office skills.
- Ability to lead agency and client coordination
- Experience with CADD and GIS preferred
- Strong attention to detail
- Experienced at working well in a team atmosphere and independently as required
- Working understanding of policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training (as required)
- Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work
- Conscientious, organized, and disciplined
- Good driving record and valid driver’s license required
- Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs
- Must be comfortable with computers and Trimble hand held GPS units or other similar GPS based survey equipment. Technical writing skills are necessary for this position
Education and Experience
- The ideal candidate will have at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (forestry, biology, ecology, natural resources, soil science or related natural resources field) with demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the Mid-Atlantic region
- ISA Certified Arborist
- MD Licensed Tree Expert (LTE)
- MD DNR Qualified Professional
- Experience of 5 years is desired, and field experience in natural resource inventories and surveys.
