Stantec’s Aviation group is looking for an Environmental Scientist to join our practice in the Portland, ME office!

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic individual with a keen interest in the natural sciences to join our Aviation Practice. The chosen candidate will work with and assist our regionally recognized team of engineers, planners, and environmental scientists with development and delivery of airport master plans, vegetation management plans, federal, state, and local environmental permit applications and NEPA documentation.

What Will You Be Doing?

As an environmental scientist, you will be working alongside others who share your passion to support communities through exciting and unique airport projects.

Specific responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with the coordination and management of environmental permitting, assessment, and/or compliance work related to various federal and state agency requirements as they pertain to a variety of aviation planning and development projects.
  • Preparing NEPA documentation including Environmental Assessments and Categorical Exclusions for airport development and planning projects.
  • Developing stormwater pollution prevention plans.
  • Delineating and characterizing wetlands, including function and value assessments.
  • Conducting natural community mapping, wildlife surveys and habitat assessments.
  • Data collection (GPS-Trimble)
  • Presenting proposed projects and project updates to state and federal transportation/ regulatory agencies and local planning boards and conservation commissions.
  • Inspecting ongoing construction activities.
  • Providing resident project oversight for projects impacting protected resources and/or surrounding areas.
  • Collaborating with project team engineers and planners regarding resource identification and protection and associated impact mitigation.

Qualifications

What Will You Need to Succeed?

  • A bachelor's degree in an environmental (biology, ecology, natural resources, or related field) discipline is required. A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated academic and professional experience with plant, soil, and wetland identification and characterization in the New England region.
  • Minimum of five years of related professional experience. Ten years of environmental consulting experience is preferred.
  • Strong technical writing skills are necessary for this position and a representative sample is required.
  • The desire to work in fast-pace and team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
  • Experience using HydroCAD stormwater modeling software strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of New England flora and fauna and familiarity with state and federal listed species programs.
  • Knowledge of state and federal permitting regulations and NEPA.
  • Ability to work in the field in all weather conditions. Overnight travel is sometimes required.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license required.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for short periods of time. Field work may include extensive data gathering and asset inspection with exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
