The Star Tribune in Minnesota is seeking a proven leader and accomplished journalist, innovator and collaborator to serve as managing editor for its award-winning 235-person newsroom.
The Star Tribune is an independent, locally owned and values-driven organization committed to producing high-quality journalism that engages, enlightens and inspires our readers.
The managing editor will work closely with the editor and news leadership team to drive news strategy and coverage of a community that is among the most civically engaged in the country. Key to that is helping to support and guide an ambitious, talented news staff focused on public service, digital transformation and business excellence. The managing editor will also collaborate with colleagues on digital strategy, audience and product development and other companywide initiatives.
Candidates should have impeccable news judgment, effective communication skills and a commitment to accountability journalism and compelling multiplatform storytelling. They must have an appreciation for the role that arts, business, culture, sports and civic institutions play in our community and a passion for serving and engaging with an audience that is diverse, discerning and dynamic.
The ability to lead and unite in a hybrid and transforming workplace is essential, and our news staff is helping to lead the way, serving on more than half a dozen workgroups to improve our hiring, retention, coverage and career development and to reinvent a workplace that will continue to thrive as the largest news outlet in the upper Midwest.

- Demonstrated depth of experience in a fast-paced news environment, including editing and management experience
- Excellent editing, planning and organizational skills on short-term and long-term projects on multiple platforms
- Demonstrated strength in navigating and making news judgments and ethical and culturally sensitive decisions under pressure
- Superior communicator and collaborator and thoughtful leader
- Creative thinker and problem-solver; able to help lead and support amid a culture of transformation
- Strong digital skills and an ability to conceptualize and frame coverage for multiple platforms
- Experience in digital strategy and audience and product development
- Ability to navigate and manage a budget, help recruit and hire new talent and participate in newsroom training and development programs
- Must be vaccinated against COVID-19 or granted an accommodation based on disability or sincerely held religious belief.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- No. 2 leader in the newsroom
- Work across the newsroom to conceive, plan and execute daily and long-term coverage.
- Ensure that standards and policies – from style to fairness and ethics, with specific focus on equity and inclusion – are met across all platforms
- Help develop and execute newsroom goals and strategies
- Embrace and support company values and goals
- Effectively and compassionately supervise, support and provide feedback for news staff
- Partner with representatives of non-news departments on company initiatives
- Responsibly represent the organization and the newsroom in the community and with partners
- Work to ensure we are operating efficiently and within budget
