The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 located in Douglas!
What you will be doing:
This position serves as the Program Leader for the Southeast Alaska (SEAK) Marine Harvest Studies (MHS) Program, which collects information on the catch, harvest, and effort of the sport fishery, which is used to help shape and manage fisheries for salmon and groundfish stocks in the Southeast region. This position provides sport fishery information to the Board of Fisheries (BOF), ADF&G staff, other fishery management agencies, and the public. Duties include coordinating the operations of the Southeast Alaska Marine Harvest Studies program; monitors the sport fisheries information in season to achieve sport fishing management objectives and data obligations; evaluates the program priorities, efficiency, and effectiveness in meeting regional data needs while supervising program staff.
Our organization, mission and culture:
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s mission is to manage, protect, maintain, and improve the fish, game and aquatic plant resources of Alaska. This position directly contributes to sustainable fisheries management through hands-on research and direction over the Southeast region's marine harvest studies program. This program provides valuable and timely sport fisheries information to managers who use the information to make management decisions in order to meet domestic and international obligations. The position is key to evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of the sampling program and supervises a cohesive team that collectively makes up the marine harvest studies program and interacts with the larger regional management team.
The benefits of joining our team:
As a research biologist and program lead, this position operates with a degree of autonomy and has the ability to shape the Marine Harvest Studies program by assessing program priorities, effectiveness at meeting regional needs, and informational and technology gaps to recommend changes or updates to the program to remain relevant and efficient. Key to this position is the ability to assess other sampling methods to determine their usefulness to the program in Southeast as well as provide vision to developing the program to meet upcoming challenges. The duties involve working indoors with some opportunity to work outdoors. This position is supported by an excellent team of professionals in the Southeast Alaska region including research and biometric staff, an enhancement and access coordinator, and administrative support.
The working environment you can expect:
The position is located at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Regional Office in Douglas, Alaska. The office is within walking distance of the Treadwell Ditch and Mount Jumbo (Bradley) trails both offering a moderate chance to view wildlife and, in some locations, beautiful panoramic views of downtown Juneau. In addition, the office is in walking distance of the Savviko Park, Sandy Beach and Mike Pusich Douglas Harbor Boat Launch Ramp offering boat access to Gastineau Channel and the local marine fishery. A person in this position would have immediate access to the regional coordinators for research, access, and enhancement along with the regional supervisor and regional administrative staff that are also located in the same office. In addition to working in a collaborative environment with statewide, regional, and area staff, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully. This position will require occasional travel to meetings, training, occasionally remote field projects, and area offices for up to two weeks at a time.
Who we are looking for:
- Knowledge and experience with salmon, groundfish, and resident species management strategies for recreational fisheries and their issues;
- Knowledge and working experience with the collection and usage of data and information provided by three sport fish division programs (Marine Harvest Studies program, Statewide Harvest Studies (SWHS), and the saltwater charter logbook program) to address sport fishery management issues;
- Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, complex technical information in a logical and effective manner to a wide variety of audiences;
- Knowledge and experience with the Alaska Board of Fisheries and the Pacific Salmon Treaty process and providing analyses and summarized information in tables, figures, and reports;
- Working experience analyzing fishery data and presenting this data in technical and management reports;
- The ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with division and department staff, private organizations, federal and state agencies and others; and
