What You Will Be Doing
The Office of History and Archaeology is recruiting for one Flex Historian 1/2 position in the OHA Survey Unit. The position requires research-based knowledge of Alaska history and its broader role in American and World history. The duties of the position involve participation in cultural resource investigations, including related technical research, on behalf of the State to ensure compliance with the Alaska Historic Preservation Act, the National Historic Preservation Act, and the associated federal and state regulations and guidelines. Duties include field work, laboratory analysis and processing, archival research, and report writing.

Mission and Culture
The mission of the Department of Natural Resources is to “develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska’s natural resources consistent with the public interest.” One of the Department of Natural Resources’ focus areas is to “ensure sufficient data acquisition and assessment of land and resources to foster responsible and community development and public safety." The mission of the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation is to “provide outdoor recreation opportunities and conserve and interpret natural, cultural, and historic resources for the use, enjoyment, and welfare of the people.” The Office of History and Archaeology’s contribution to the Department’s mission is to provide a historic preservation program to encourage the preservation and protection of historic, prehistoric, and archaeological resources of Alaska. The Office of History and Archaeology (OHA) is Alaska's primary office with knowledge and expertise in historic preservation dedicated to preserving and interpreting Alaska's past and serves as Alaska's State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. OHA administers programs authorized by both the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and the Alaska Historic Preservation Act of 1971. The office works with federal and state agencies, tribes, local governments, the public, and educational and not-for-profit organizations to identify, preserve, protect, and interpret the state's cultural, historical, and archaeological resources, ensuring that our heritage is passed on to future generations.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
The Office of History and Archaeology is within the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Department of Natural Resources. Its office is in the Atwood Building in downtown Anchorage on the same floor as the Division of Parks & Outdoor Recreation Director’s Office. OHA is an open office environment in which the incumbent has access to desk space, personal computers, and software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc. Digital scanning, copying, filing, and computer work are daily activities. The incumbent contributes to in-person and virtual meetings weekly. Field work includes traveling to and conducting field investigations in cities, towns, communities, and remote locations throughout Alaska,

The knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to be successful in this position include


  • Experience conducting historical research, interviews and oral histories, cultural resource field investigations, and writing reports that reflect analytic and organizational skills.
  • A broad background in history, historiography, knowledge of Alaska history, Alaska's built environment (sites, buildings, and landscapes), and research methods.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications, specifically word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Considerable knowledge of writing standards for professional report writing and publication.

Minimum Qualifications

Historian 1 - Starting Salary $2123.25


Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with a major in history, architectural history, or a closely related field, and one year experience in the collection, synthesis, evaluation and presentation of historical or architectural historic data.

Substitution: Completion of one year of graduate level study in history, architectural history or a closely related field will substitute for the required experience.


Historian 2 -
Starting Salary $2446.50


Master's degree from an accredited college in history, architectural history, or closely related fields and one year experience in the collection, synthesis, evaluation and presentation of historical data as an Historian 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution: Additional graduate study in history, architectural history, or closely related fields beyond the specified master's degree may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Two years of professional historical research experience beyond the bachelor's degree will substitute for the required master's degree.

Flexible Staffing
This position is flexibly staffed. The level of the job offer will be based on the selected candidate’s eligibility. If hired at the lower level, you will be promoted to the higher-level job class after completing the training plan and meeting the minimum qualifications.
