What you will be doing:

Payroll Services Supervisors supervise and manage a payroll services team and perform journey level professional tasks that are analytical, evaluative, and interpretive in nature with respect to the payroll function.

The working environment you can expect:
We are located in the Michael J. Burns building, close to the Juneau/Douglas bridge; within walking distance to restaurants and grocery stores. This is a fast-paced work environment with duties changing daily based on the needs of payroll staff and the payroll cycle.

In order to be successful in this position, we are looking for an applicant that possesses the following knowledge, skills, abilities and experience:
  • Considerable knowledge of personnel and payroll processes, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Great customer service and communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Skills in interpreting and explaining policies and procedures, rules, statutes, and regulations to a wide variety of people, orally and in writing.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to train and evaluate the performance of others.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or the equivalent in any field from an accredited college and either:

One year of advanced technical level payroll experience processing payroll actions, reviewing error reports, and resolving conflicts. This experience is met by service as a Human Resource Technician III with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR
Two years of journey technical level payroll experience processing payroll actions, reviewing error reports, and resolving conflicts. This experience is met by service as a Human Resource Technician II or Retirement and Benefits Technician II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR
Two years of experience performing technical or professional level administrative duties where a substantial part of the duty assignment is the performance of human resource work equivalent to an Administrative Assistant II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR
Two years of technical level dispatching experience as an Alaska Marine Highway System Dispatcher with the State of Alaska.

OR
Six months of professional level human resource experience as a Human Resource Specialist I, or a Payroll Specialist I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR
Combination of two years of work experience and education from an accredited college, where at least one year of experience was gained as an Human Resource Technician II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR
Combination of two years of work experience and education from an accredited college, where at least one year of experience was gained as an Administrative Assistant II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:
Four years of any combination of post-secondary education from an accredited college (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and technical/paraprofessional level human resource experience will substitute for the required degree. Technical/paraprofessional level human resource experience includes such work as Human Resource Technician or Administrative Assistant with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Special Note:
"Human resource" includes experience in recruitment and selection, classification, employee training, employer provided benefits programs, employment law compliance, personnel, payroll processing or system administration, or labor relations. Supervision of subordinates does not in itself constitute human resource work.
