We are looking for an applicant who is self-motivated and a team player who can work in coordination with staff within the Alaska Division of Agriculture to carry out needed publication and communication functions that support agriculture. Mission and Culture
The Department of Natural Resources' mission is to develop, conserve and maximize the use of Alaska's natural resources consistent with the public interest. The mission of the Division of Agriculture is to
promote and encourage the development of the agriculture industry in the State. The incumbent will contribute to these missions by working with staff in various program areas: Alaska Grown, Lands, Grants, Revegetation/ Reclamation, etc., by providing publication and communication support.

Core Responsibilities
The primary purpose of this position is to be the Publication specialist for the Alaska Division of Agriculture. The position receives information from staff in raw form and converts it into publications, social media, etc., suitable for distribution to the public. This is accomplished through fully proficient level writing, editing, design and layout. The publications include articles, brochures, newsletters, presentations, press releases, public notices, etc., on the Internet or other media. The position manages a variety of social media and website platforms. This position also maintains a collection of photographs, videos, etc.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
This position is in the Palmer office at 1801 S. Margaret Dr., Suite 12, Palmer. The daily work environment is filled with diverse and unique scenarios that require creative problem-solving. This position provides the opportunity to work closely and in collaboration with Alaska’s statewide agricultural communities.

The knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies (KSA/C) needed to be successful in this position include:
Publication and communication skills with proficiencies in writing, editing, design and layout, and publishing duties, ensuring delivery of printed materials such as publications, brochures, newsletters, and electronic documents for the internet. Competencies include:


  • Working knowledge of principles of writing, communication, modern English usage, editing, and publication design techniques used to design layout, illustrate, reproduce, and distribute publications and other printed material.
  • Skills in typography, publication format, specialty style manuals, and conventions for appropriate subject matter; printing and internet publication.
  • Skills in interpretive, technical, scientific, or creative writing, editing, and preparing publications and other material for printing or internet publication.
  • Skills in photography, videography, video editing, and social media management.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in


  • Communications and Media: Knowledge of the production, communication and dissemination of information and ideas to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.

  • Computer Skills: Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations; is sensitive to cultural diversity, race, gender, disabilities, and other individual differences.

  • Multimedia Technologies: Knowledge of the principles, methods, tools, and techniques to develop or apply technology using text, audio, graphics, or other media.

  • Writing: Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material, that is appropriate for the intended audience.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:
Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or experience in writing, editing, design and layout, of written materials, such as, publications, articles, brochures, newsletters, or other printed materials and/or internet documents.
