The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for a
Vocational Instructor position at the Wildwood Correctional Center (WCC) in Kenai, Alaska.
 


What you will be doing:
The position teaches courses certified by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). The position provides class lectures and instruction of textbook curriculum, supervises inmates for safety and compliance of NCCER's performance testing, and setting up and operating computer simulators.  The position delivers tests to inmates and submits paperwork to the Accredited Training Sponsor.  The position counsel's prisoners in areas of career development, education, and vocational training.  Primary duty is to plan, develop, implement, coordinate and instruct a vocation training program for students.  The position develops and provides teaching to students in general work practices and expectations.

The working environment you can expect:
You will be working at Wildwood Correctional Complex, which is approximately three miles north of Kenai and houses approximately 470 prisoners. Correctional Facilities are operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Your normal hours will be Monday-Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm. After demonstration of competent performance, an alternative schedule may be agreed upon. You will teach classrooms with educational and interactive technology and have a private office to conduct your lesson plans.  This position counsels’ prisoners in areas of career choice, educational opportunities, and vocational trainings to develop individual career development plans.

  • Planning and Evaluating: Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.

Specific Requirements:
Position will require an extensive background investigation and will work with inmates requiring care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk.

Journey level status in a recognized trade and/or the appropriate National Center for Construction and Education Research (NCCER) certification(s).
Three years of journey-level trade experience in the applicable trade.
OR
Three years as a certified teacher in a vocational/technical construction or maintenance related training program.
OR
National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification in the applicable trade(s). 
 
Special Note: 
Positions in the Vocational Instructor job class require expertise in a particular vocational trade such as the electrical, construction, or other trades. Recruitment and selection for these positions will be from among only those candidates who have the appropriate specialty background identified in the recruitment bulletin.
 
As a condition of employment, some positions will be required to obtain NCCER certification in the applicable field with one year of employment.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Applicants are required to either attached to their application or provide at time of interview the following:
  • A list of three professional references and the last three performance evaluations, if available.   If not available, include a written explanation as to the reason.
  • Educational Transcripts/Copy of Degree 
  • Copies of Instructions Certifications/Certificates (if applicable)
  • A copy of your last three performance evaluations. Supervisory letters of reference may be substituted if evaluations are not available.

PREA NOTIFICATION
The Department of Corrections follows and maintains federal and state requirements standards including, but not limited to, Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards which apply to all public and private institutions that house adult or juvenile offenders. PREA standards preclude the department from hiring or promoting anyone who has engaged in, or been convicted of any conduct which would violate PREA standards related to sexual assault including:
  • Sexual abuse in a prison, jail, lockup, community confinement facility, juvenile facility, or other institution;
  • Convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse; or
  • Has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described above.


EDUCATION
If post-secondary education is required to meet the minimum qualifications, you must fill in the Education section of the application. If you have not obtained a degree, please indicate the number of units completed. Copies of transcripts are required to verify educational credentials if used to meet the minimum qualifications for a position. Transcripts can be attached at the time of application or provided at the time of interview, at the discretion of the hiring manager.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FOREIGN EDUCATION
Education completed in foreign colleges, universities, or high schools may be used to meet the minimum qualifications listed above. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the post-secondary institution or high school.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

WORK EXPERIENCE
If using work experience in your Applicant Profile, you must also provide the employer's name, your job title, dates of employment and whether full or part-time. Applicant Profiles will be reviewed to determine if the responses are supported, and Minimum Qualifications are clearly met. If they are not, the applicant may not advance to the interview and selection phase of the recruitment.

CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECKS/APSIN/ACOMS
Please be aware – this position requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS).  A security clearance issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is necessary to use APSIN/ACOMS.  DPS will deny security clearance for any applicant who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor in this state or another jurisdiction, or who may be a fugitive from justice.  Additionally, security clearance will be withdrawn if DPS discovers that material information was falsified or omitted at the time of the initial application for security clearance.
