The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Division of Measurement Standards & Commercial Vehicle Compliance (MSCVC) is looking for a Weights & Measures Inspector to help us Keep Alaska Moving!


Weights and Measures Inspector Trainee - $21.69 hourly
Weights and Measures inspector 1 - $24.65 hourly
Weights and Measures Inspector 2 - $28.31 hourly

 

What you will be doing:
In this position, you will work with industry standards to perform tests on scales and meters to ensure compliance with Alaska’s Weights and Measures Act. These tests ensure accuracy in commercial sales for commodities sold in industries, including fishing, mining, construction, fuel, and more. Your ability to test and inspect devices provides marketplace confidence and equity in trade for all Alaskans.

As an Inspector Trainee you will be provided supervised on the job training to perform a range of weights and measures testing, inspection and enforcement of limited deivice types. 

As an Inspector 1 you will conduct a full range of testing, inspection and enforcement on all device types. You will also receive supervised training on the larger and more complex device types. 

As an Inspector 2 you will conduct a full range of testing, inspection and enforcement on all device types including large device types and more complex types. You will also provide instruction and training to Inspector Trainees and Inspector 1 as assigned.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is based in Anchorage with frequent travel to remote areas throughout the state. Overtime opportunities are available during peak travel season.

Weights and Measures Inspector Trainee

High School Diploma or the equivalent
AND
One year of experience in one or more of the following:
1) installation, maintenance, or repair of weighing and measuring devices;
2) installation, maintenance, or repair of liquid measuring devices;
3) employment using commercial weighing or measuring devices.

Special Note:
Special Requirement:
As a condition of continued employment incumbents must obtain a Type A or B commercial driver's license within six months of hire. Employees holding a commercial drivers license will be subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Note: Requires moderate physical labor which includes lifting and carrying weights up to 50 pounds.

Weights and Measures Inspector 1
Possession of an Alaska commercial driver's license (Type A or Type B)

AND EITHER
(1) One year of weights and measures inspection experience with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere;
OR
(2) Satisfactory completion of the departmental training program;
OR
(3) Three years of experience in one or more of the following:
a) Installation, maintenance and repair of weighing and measuring devices.
b) Installation, maintenance and repair of liquid measuring devices.
c) Managerial experience in the wholesale or retail food industry. 

Weights and Measures Inspector 2
Possession of an Alaska commercial driver's license (Type A or Type B)
AND EITHER
(1) Two years of weights and measures inspection experience with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere;
OR
(2) Four years of experience in one or more of the following:
a) Installation, maintenance and repair of weighing and measuring devices.
b) Installation, maintenance and repair of liquid measuring devices.
c) Managerial experience in the wholesale or retail food industry.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED 
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Inspector or 1 or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at the Trainee level, promotion to the Level 1 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
