What You Will Be Doing
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is recruiting a field going WFRT 1 assigned to an Initial Attack Helicopter based in Remote Alaska (McGrath).  This position will also be assigned to Wildland/Urban Interface Fuels Reduction Projects across the area.  This is a unique and challenging position located in remote Alaska.  Services and recreation activities are severely limited.  Significant travel away from the duty station will be required for this position.
 
Mission and Culture
The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection, Southwest Area, provides Wildland Fire Suppression and Support activities for 88 million acres in Southwest Alaska.  The Area also continues to implement a widespread Fuels Reduction Program Activities in order to protect communities and values at risk.  
 
Core Responsibilities 
This position will serve as an entry-level crew member on a Fuels Reduction/Helitack Crew during all phases of existing Fire Suppression and Fuels Reduction project activities.  Fuels reduction activities include removing timber, clearing brush, piling vegetation, burning vegetation piles, maintaining project-related equipment, and documenting daily activities.  This position will also be expected to respond to both initial attack and extended attack wildfire incidents as a Wildland Firefighter.

The Working Environment You Can Expect
The Duty Station for the position is assigned to McGrath, Alaska.  McGrath is a remote community located on the upper reaches of the Kuskokwim River in Southwest Alaska.  “Dry” Housing on the compound is offered to the selected candidate with a communal bathroom, laundry, and dining facilities provided.  McGrath is a very remote Alaskan community that can only be accessed by air travel and boasts a population of approximately 250 humans with limited services.
 
The knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies needed to be successful in this position include:

• Successful completion of the Basic Wildland Firefighter Training Course.

Must be eighteen years of age.

Special Note: 
Applicant must be able to pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level as defined in Federal Publication PMS 307, Work Capacity Test Administrator' Guide. This test requires that the applicant complete a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less.

Must possess an Alaska driver's license. An individual without an Alaska driver's license, who meets the minimum age and experience requirements, may apply for the vacancy. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon acquisition of an Alaska driver's license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.

Positions may require travel both in and out-of-state for fire suppression assignments; must be on stand-by or recall status during the fire season; must be available for assignments in and out of the area that requires the absence from the duty station for 14 to 21 days; must fly in small fixed wing aircraft or helicopters; and handling hazardous materials.

Some positions require a commercial driver license with appropriate endorsements.
