The Fleet Services Headquarters Motor Pool-Light Fleet Unit provides CDOT with a statewide service for ordering new light duty fleet vehicles and maintenance and repair services as a central shop for the light duty vehicles and mobile equipment used by the Department of Transportation Headquarters/Regional staff and other State agencies.
The unit also provides rental vehicles to CDOT employees to assist them in their transportation needs.
About the Position
The Equipment Mechanic Trainee will learn to provide the mechanical expertise required to perform daily and routine maintenance to state vehicles and equipment. This position will perform routine services, diagnose and repair minor failures, and modify existing equipment to meet the Department’s needs. Position performs routine safety and compliance inspections required by state and federal law.
This position will learn the following duties and responsibilities:
- Repair and perform routine maintenance on all major systems including brakes, suspension, steering, wheels and tires, gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, drivelines, and electrical/electronics (vehicles include light and medium duty trucks, sedans, minivans, passenger vans, sport-utility vehicles, and light duty /utility equipment);
- Install special equipment such as AVL systems, overhead warning lights, etc.
- Maintain and repair motor pool vehicles for use by CDOT employees and assists rental customers with paperwork, directions, and vehicle operation instructions;
- Fuel, clean, and vacuum vehicles assigned to Motor Pool, Division of Maintenance & Operations, and Headquarters executives;
- Use diagnostic computers and other equipment to interface with vehicle computers to determine source of problems;
- Use the fleet tracking software applications Colorado Automotive Reporting System (CARS) and SAP to check equipment history;
- Complete work orders accurately; process rental car forms and fill out time sheets;
- Other job duties as assigned.
- Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday, from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm
- Local driving will be required to transport vehicles to vendors and state facilities
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
- Six months of experience inspecting, servicing, and maintaining automotive vehicles.
Successful completion of non-correspondence vocational training in automotive technology from an accredited vocational school may substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis.

- A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
The exceptional applicant will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
- Demonstrated success with the duties as listed in the Description of the Job section;
- Ability to quickly learn with minimal direction;
- Mechanical experience with troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of electric & hybrid type vehicles and equipment is highly desirable;
- Experience designing and fabricating parts and special tools needed for unique and emergency situations;
- Small, medium/heavy truck ASE Certifications in Diesel Engine, Drive Trains, Transmissions, Engine Repair, Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating, Ventilation and A/C is preferred. Please submit a copy of your ASE Certificate(s) on your online application;
