About the Division of Youth Services Office of Staff Development: 

The Office of Staff Development (OSD) exists to develop, coordinate, and implement training and staff development programs for all Division of Youth Services (DYS) employees.  This includes but is not limited to training and/or oversight in the following areas: Treatment modalities such as Aggression Replacement Training and Thinking for a Change, Mental Health Interventions, Crisis Intervention and Prevention, Cardio Pulmonary Recitation/First Aid, Prison Rape Elimination Act, Supervisory Training, Trauma Informed/Responsive, Code of Ethics, Policy/Procedure, Customer Service, Report Writing, Adolescent Development, Sex Offender training, Substance Abuse, Suicide Assessment and Prevention, Instructional Theory into Practice training the trainer, Universal Precautions, Strength-Based Approach, various EDI subjects and numerous other initiatives that the Division promotes.  The work unit is responsible for the writing and oversight of Policies that directly relate to the Division’s training program.  In addition, the work unit is responsible for the interpretation and presentation of new Policies and updates.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

We are seeking an exceptional individual to serve as a Lead Trainer (Training Specialist IV); a position that will work with various stakeholders, subject matter experts, and the training team to create and deliver innovative training solutions that align with the Division's Colorado Model.  Our ideal candidate brings the following attributes to the position: understands adult learning theory and best practices in training, is able to work well in team settings, able to lead projects to successful completion, able to consistently meet deadlines, and can use critical thinking skills to problem solve through challenges.



Specific Job Duties Include:
This position is required to provide lead work in the development, implementation, facilitation, and/or oversight of training all Division of Youth Services staff in the areas of juvenile mental health, milieu management,  sex offender services, and various therapeutic interventions. This position will write and/or oversee the development of training lesson plans based on policy, current trends, and research, to train staff on effective treatment and management intervention that promote DYS's mission. This position's duties include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Develop, implement, and facilitate evidence-based training programs that focus on therapeutic interventions, trauma-informed/response practices, and mental health services that help to equip staff who are working with an increasingly complex juvenile population.

  • The position will use their expertise and/or best practice standards to develop and provide training that supports the educational needs of the division.

  • Supervisory responsibility for two FTE positions, which include assigning work, providing necessary training, and completing performance plans and appraisals.

  • Analyzes and develops learning plans to address organizational training needs to include those that help to enhance therapeutic services. 

  • Provide recommendations to DYS leadership and other key stakeholders on programs, initiatives, and/or strategies that will aid in organizational efforts as we work to further align with the Colorado Model, 7 Commitments, 5 Key Strategies, and our vision and mission statement. 

  • Assist the Director of Staff Development in the collection and tracking of data to inform the decision-making process when developing training strategies that align with the mission, vision, and Colorado Model goals.   

  • Help to create and interpret policy/procedures that will either be used to guide or be addressed through training services.

  • The position will maintain lines of communication with facilities, other organizations, client managers, and clinical and direct care workers to ensure the stakeholder's needs are being addressed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience and Education:
  • Seven (7) years of professional experience in counseling and/or as a client management/parole officer or a similar occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
                      ~OR~
  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, human services, or a closely related field, AND three (3) years of professional experience in counseling and/or as a client management/parole officer or a similar occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
~And~
 
Certification:
  • Must either have or be able to certify as an ASHI FA/CPR Instructor trainer
  • Must either have or be able to certify as a Protective Supports and Intervention Instructor which is the organization's crisis prevention and intervention program
 
 
Substitutions:
  • Additional appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.




Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years experience providing formal training. 
  • Master's degree in Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field.
  • Client Manager/Parole Officer and/or Probation work experience.
  • Current, valid licensure as an LCSW or LPC from the Colorado State Board of Licensed Professional Counselor Examiners. 

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must be 21 years old or older
  • Travel: Since the division has locations across the state, the position is expected to travel for training as needed.  
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. Driver's License
  • Must have no felony convictions and no violent history
  • Must pass a Colorado Bureau of Investigations and a Federal Bureau of Investigations background check as a condition of employment. Included in the background check is a current and/or previous employer check. Your current and/or previous employers within the past 10 years at a minimum must be listed on your job application (most recent in descending order), even if the job or duties are unrelated to the position for which you are applying. Incomplete employer information (address, phone number, and supervisor) or omission of former employers may result in a disqualification of your application.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant’s prior State employment.  Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS.
