Your Specific Responsibilities:
This position involves advanced professional Environmental Health work independently conducting inspections of regulated facilities and entities for compliance with Florida Statutes, Florida Administrative Code, Sarasota County Ordinance and department policy. This is a generalist Environmental Specialist II position requiring work in all Environmental Health programs. The position is based in the South County Environmental Health office in Venice and will primarily serve the southern half of Sarasota County. However, travel to the North County Environmental Health office (located in Sarasota) will be required as needed depending on work and staffing demands. Use of personal vehicle will be required (with mileage reimbursed per Florida Statute Chapter 112.061.) Assigned duties will include a majority of work outdoors conducting inspections and site evaluations of unimproved and un-cleared acreage and/or land parcels covered in thick vegetation in all types of weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, high humidity, and other adverse and unpleasant conditions. This position reports to the Environmental Supervisor I - SES.
GENERAL ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM SUPPORT: Provides field and staff support for all environmental health programs, including but not limited to: Public Swimming Pools and Bathing Areas; Healthy Beaches Program; Onsite-Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS); Water Well Drilling; Public Drinking Water Systems; Water Well Surveillance; Mobile Home Parks (MHP), Recreational Vehicle Parks and Migrant Farm Labor Camps; Biomedical Waste, Tattoo, Body Piercing; Sanitary and Environmental Nuisance Complaint Investigations, and other DOH-Sarasota regulated facilities.
FOOD SERVICE ESTABLISHMENTS: Perform inspections of Department of Health (DOH) regulated food service facilities to assure compliance with FAC. Review plans and make recommendations for new and remodeled establishments to ensure compliance with F.S. and FAC.
RABIES: Provides rabies prevention and control guidance to health care providers, Sarasota County Animal Services, veterinarians, and others as needed and appropriate. Reviews animal surveillance and human exposure data. Reviews other zoonotic disease cases including those caused by potential bioterrorist agents (Brucella, Q fever, plague, tularemia, etc.). Investigates and assess possible rabies exposures to humans or domestic animals according to standards and reporting requirements and procedures per version of the guidebook.
GROUP CARE FACILITY INSPECTIONS AND NON-EMERGENCY VEHICLE INSPECTIONS. Performs inspections of all public and private and other group care facilities in accordance with Florida Statures (FS), Florida Administrative Code (FAC) and Sarasota County Ordinance. Inspects non-emergency medical transport vehicles to ensure compliance with current codes.
OTHER DUTIES: As assigned including providing support for all Environmental Health programs as assigned by Environmental Health Director/ Designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Environmental Health Programs
- Computer skills including Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to use basic office equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions including extreme heat, intense sunshine, high humidity, cold temperatures, precipitation, and other adverse and unpleasant conditions
Qualifications:
Minimum –
- Bachelor’s degree in a physical or natural science OR a Bachelor’s degree in any subject with a minimum of 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) in physical or natural sciences, college-level mathematics or statistics and at least two years’ experience working in environmental health
- Valid Florida driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one
- Obtain/ maintain Certification as an Environmental Health Professional in Food Protection as required in Chapter 381, Florida Statues
Preferred –
- Credentialed Registered Environmental Specialist/Registered Sanitarian with the Florida Environmental Health Association or the National Environmental Health Association
