MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of professional experience in systems analysis, management analysis, program planning, program research, program evaluation, engineering or administrative work.

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university can substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

Professional or non-professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Requires possession of a valid driver license.

Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.

JOB DUTIES:

This is a highly specialized position where the incumbent will act as the Wildfire Mitigation Specialist for the Suwannee Forestry Center and Perry District.

This individual will conduct and coordinate fire prevention and mitigation activities as directed by the immediate supervisor. Develops an annual wildfire mitigation plan for the Suwanee Forestry Center and Perry District that prioritizes fuel reduction projects according to wildfire risk and public safety. Coordinates with counties, municipalities, associations, and landowners in the development of mitigation project plans for areas needing private contractor work; assists in preparing maps, project descriptions, Invitations to Bid (ITB), contract development, and may serve as the contract manager for mitigation projects with private resources. Coordinates with local and regional Florida Forest Service (FFS) staff on large scale fuel reduction projects. Coordinates with the State Fire Mitigation Coordinator. Provides wildfire and emergency response support as directed. Assists in the enforcement of Florida’s open burning laws and regulations.

Coordinates and participates in fire prevention activities as directed by the District Manager. Informs and educates the public and government entities regarding, but not limited to, prescribed burning, knowledge of burning regulations, state lands activities and wildland fire. Participates in programs, fairs, exhibits and other events that require FFS presence. Serves on the District fire prevention committees and assists with the planning, development and implementation of the District annual wildfire prevention plan. Coordinates prevention activities with the state Fire Prevention Coordinator.

Serves as the District Public Information Officer. Acts as primary point of contact for news media and the public. Informs and educates citizens regarding fire danger or special occurrences associated with the health, welfare and safety of affected citizens utilizing all forms of media, including print, radio, television and social media. This includes conducting interviews, coordinating interviews for field staff, coordinating field visits for media and VIP’s on incidents and providing updates as needed. Coordinates media activities and press releases through the State Communications and Public Relations Coordinator. Responsible for the development and maintenance of the District’s social media platforms.

Works with federal, state, county and private partners on wildfire risk reduction educational programs. This may include but not limited to: Firewise USA, Ready, Set, Go!, Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP), using the Southern Wildfire Risk Assessment Portal (South WRAP) and conducting community risk assessments. Serves as the FFS representative on the Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) committee for all counties in their field unit. Works with local and regional governments to increase wildfire awareness and promote wildland risk reduction activities. Works with local government officials to incorporate wildfire risk reduction into county codes, regulations, and comprehensive plans.

This position will be familiar with digital and video camera equipment to record ongoing events and collect pictures and videos of such quality as to make available for distribution and training.
