The Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) is seeking a Biometrician. This position will be part of the Wildlife Research Program and will provide a variety of statistical and analytical support to IDFG statewide. The position will be stationed at our Idaho Falls regional office.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a wildlife research team member responsible for experimental design, statistical analysis, and scientific review to meet the goals and requirements of statewide wildlife research, management, and monitoring projects.
  • Works closely with wildlife research personnel and managers to identify research needs and develop applied research questions.
  • Collaborates with wildlife research personnel and partners (e.g., university faculty, graduate students, etc.) to plan and conduct wildlife research projects.
  • Facilitates the use and development of novel statistical methodology to guide Idaho wildlife management.
  • Provides technical assistance to department staff in sampling and analytical methods.
  • Conducts analyses on new and existing data to inform management decision-making, including analyses on population demographics and trends, spatial/movement modeling, and harvest estimation.
  • Develops reports, visualizations, and applications to communicate data and scientific research to agency personnel.
  • Writes and reviews statistical content in scientific papers and technical reports.
  • Presents analyses and results from research projects addressing management-related questions at internal and professional meetings.

Minimum Qualifications: (These qualifications are required.)

(Typically gained by a master’s degree in Statistics, Statistical Ecology, Quantitative Ecology, or Fisheries/Wildlife Biology [quantitative emphasis] OR a closely related quantitative field and a minimum of 20 semester hours of mathematics and/or statistics.)

  • Considerable knowledge in fish and/or wildlife biometry
  • Considerable knowledge of population dynamics, ecological modeling, and applied statistics with a comprehensive knowledge of statistical theory and techniques of quantitative biological research.
  • Experience that demonstrates advanced computer skills including word processing, database management and programming languages for databases such as MS Access, Oracle, MySQL, and SQL Server, and the analysis of computer data using standard statistical software including R.
  • Experience presenting biological data and analytical results clearly and in an understandable manner to communicate orally/written with policy makers, technical staff, and external partners and stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD and two or more years of professional work experience as a biometrician or quantitative research biologist in a natural resources-related field as well as a strong publication record. They also will have knowledge of a broad range of statistical analyses (e.g., GLMMs, hierarchal Bayesian models, machine learning) and coding languages or applications (e.g., Python, Jags, program R) and experience managing large wildlife datasets and/or remotely sensed, landscape-scale layers. Additional consideration may be given at the time of interview to candidates who have this training and/or experience.
