Come join a great team at State Hospital West (SHW)! We are seeking Psychiatric Technicians Trainees (temporary) for SHW located in Nampa. SHW is a 16-bed Adolescent Psychiatric Treatment Hospital (for adolescents between 11 and 18 years old) nestled between Ridgecrest and Centennial golf courses on a picturesque piece of state property along the Nampa Interstate 84 corridor. SHW provides psychiatric inpatient treatment care for Idaho’s adolescent citizens with the most serious and persistent mental illnesses. The hospital works in partnership with families and communities to enable clients to return to community living and will be accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations and certified by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

POSITION INFORMATION: Our Psychiatric Technician Trainee position is an underfill position for applicants that do not meet our Psychiatric Technician qualifications. This allows those applicants to receive and complete necessary training and allow time to obtain more experience and/or certifications so that they can be considered for a promotion to the Psychiatric Technician position. These positions will be working under the direction of the Director of Nursing to implement, maintain, and manage patient care and safety. This position also requires applicants to become certified in CPR and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. Employees may be required to work weekends, holidays, day, evening and night shifts (swing or night shifts include 5% shift pay). Applicants with a CNA or a certification for Recreational Behavioral Technician (RBT) are encouraged to apply.
This announcement may be used to fill full-time, part-time, and temporary positions. Temporary positions are limited to working 1,385 hours in a 12-month period for any one state agency. Employees are eligible for benefits if they work twenty (20) hours or more per week and the term of employment is expected to exceed five (5) continuous months.
The Idaho Department of Health & Welfare is a drug-free workplace. In addition, successful candidates will be required to complete a criminal history background investigation. Employment is dependent upon satisfactory results of the investigation.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
- Provide social skills training, calming techniques, and other coping strategies to individuals with intellectual disabilities and mental illness who may behave violently and aggressively toward you and others.
- Intervene in crisis or potentially harmful situations by using specific early intervention techniques and/or physical restraining techniques.
- Participate in on and off campus training. Provide training and support to complete all activities of daily living (dressing, grooming, cooking, cleaning, etc.)
- Interact with clients to model and encourage appropriate behavior and to address aggressive behavior.
- Conduct well-defined therapeutic training sessions on a one-to-one group basis.
- Maintain the safety and security of clients, and take action in crisis situations including involvement in emergencies such as fire evacuations or the administration of first aid/or CPR.
- Interact with clients to encourage appropriate behavior and to control aggressive behavior as well provide social skills training in areas such as: social interaction, leisure time activities; planning and decision making; and money management.
- Identify and report changes in client behavior and health. Take, record, and report sleep patterns, diet information, behaviors, and training progress. Maintain client progress records.
- Engage in physical activities (exercise and sports) with clients for up to an hour at a time. Maintain the environment by performing basic housekeeping duties.
- Frequently perform tasks that require you to bend, push, and pull wheeled and other items, twist and squat, use both left and right arms, use right and left hands and wrists, and reach above your shoulders. In addition, you must be able to lift up to 50 pounds while performing the tasks above, and you may be required to pursue clients to ensure safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. Please make sure your resume or work history supports your meeting the minimum qualifications for this position. Failure to do this may disqualify you from being considered for this position. It is highly recommended to attach a one-page cover letter to your application to demonstrate how you meet the requirements below.
- Some knowledge of personal hygiene and first aid. Typically requires at least two months of experience performing these functions OR a willingness to learn them.
- Experience following written and oral instructions. Typically requires at least six months of experience.
- Ability to read and write in English.
