Position Overview
Under general supervision of the Public Service Administrator, instructs offenders' in the assigned curriculum area using developmental teaching methods and techniques consistent with the current teaching methodology. Prepares, executes and document diagnostic test instrument geared to each offenders' abilities and needs. Administers testing on a follow-up basis to gauge the rate and scope of progress in maximizing the offender's potential and meeting the educational and behavioral goals. Goal setting with offenders, fellow teachers, administrators, and counselors as the result of evaluation and continuing interaction shall be a basis for directing the educational approach and formalizing the individual offender's plan. Provide development, corrective, and supportive supervision.
Job Responsibilities
1. Administer classroom and individual level instruction to participating individuals in custody.
2. With the purview of the Core Curriculum policy, develop curricula for each assigned teaching subject and approximate grade level..
3. Develops examination tools designed to measure each offenders' strengths, weaknesses and progress.
4. Prepares and keeps detailed records on attendance, achievement, and individual progress and needs of the individual in custody.
5. Attends and participates in discussion and planning at regular staff development meetings; attend in-service and other professional development seminars.
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires possession of a current and valid ISBE issued Professional Educator License with endorsement appropriate to the content area, grade level and instructional area in which the individual is approved to work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Requires ability to communicate with and instruct adult students of all levels of competence when assigned.
- Requires ability to communicate with and instruct students with physical and/or intellectual disabilities.
- Requires elementary knowledge of behavior modification principles.
- Requires elementary knowledge of the ability to operate a personal computer.
- Requires ability to prepare written documentation related to student performance and education.
- Requires ability to relate to students with extreme and profound emotional impairments.
- Requires patience and tolerance of a wide range of behavior.
- Requires ability to use the English language preparing and delivering instructions.
- Requires ability to evaluate the student, to select behavioral objectives to meet the student's needs, and to guide and to direct facility staff regarding the necessary training and educational development of a student.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires the ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy.
- The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.
COVID19 VACCINATION MANDATE:
Governor Pritzker announced a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all State employees whose job duties require them to work in a congregate care facility. All 24/7 congregate-care facilities operated by the Illinois Department of Corrections are included in this mandate, which is scheduled to take place October 26, 2021. Administration is currently in negotiations with AFSCME for employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement in regard to this mandate. The State will offer the exemptions required under law for those who cannot be vaccinated for medical and/or religious reasons.
