Purpose:
This is professional service work involving regional and statewide support of PK-12 bilingual and multilingual programming, heritage and world languages, and multilingual students. The position provides PK-12 Bilingual and multilingual program leadership and expertise to organizations and educators statewide through the provision of professional development opportunities and technical assistance. Additionally, in support of our statewide economic development goals, requiring high quality and engaging PK-12 learning experiences that prepare Maine students for postsecondary education and/or a highly skilled workforce, this position is responsible for ensuring that school leaders and educators understand the benefits of a "Whole Student" approach to education and the importance of interdisciplinary instruction, project-based (and other active, applied teaching and learning practices), and authentic, instructionally embedded assessment, as key levers for student engagement, deeper learning, and equity of access for all students. This position is also responsible for designing and implementing live and asynchronous, online professional development plans, and providing virtual office hours and technical assistance in these best practices to support school leaders, educators, and curriculum coordinators in the development of interdisciplinary, project based and/or applied learning units of study, lessons, and activities for Maine students, particularly Maine's growing multilingual population. Work is performed in collaboration with other members of the Maine DOE and is executed under limited supervision. Extensive use of technology, statewide/national travel and field assignments are required.
