We are seeking an individual responsible for supporting approximately 370 businesses and more than 1280 technicians in the counties of Androscoggin and Oxford. Businesses and technicians would rely on the successful candidate to conduct all vehicle inspections and respond to any issues that may arise. To ensure the security of our most priceless cargo, our children, this person will also annually inspect more than 350 school buses. Additional duties of this position include looking into client complaints and overseeing the Inspection Program's legal compliance. Statewide travel may be required.

Primary responsibilities include:  

  • Providing technical and procedural information to members of the public, inspection technicians, and other personnel
  • Performing motor vehicle and school bus inspections
  • Conducting inspection station audits, issuing warnings to inspection mechanics and inspection
    stations, and suspending the licenses of inspection mechanics and inspection stations as assigned.
  • Conducting written examinations for inspection mechanics and inspection station licensing.
  • Working at the State Police Garage to augment the staff when needed.

Skills or knowledge required:

  • Knowledge of state and federal (FMCSR, FMVSS) laws, rules, and regulations governing the manufacture and inspections of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of State Police policies, practices, and procedures applicable to motor vehicle inspections.
  • Knowledge of the construction of motor vehicles in relation to mechanical defects.
  • Ability to inspect all types of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Ability to obtain, record, and safeguard evidence.
  • Ability to testify in court and at administrative hearings.
  • Ability to prepare investigative reports.
  • Ability to read and understand complex codes, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to use tact, diplomacy, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to elicit information from people.
  • Ability to use a checklist to conduct an inspection.
  • Ability to plan and organize work independently.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Ability to conduct investigations and inspections.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to mediate and resolve disputes between customers and inspection mechanics or station owners.
  • Knowledge of common arithmetical skills.
  • Knowledge of equipment used in performing a motor vehicle inspection.
  • Knowledge of trends in automotive design.

Minimum qualifications:

Four (4) years of mechanic education, training, and experience related to the repair and maintenance of a variety of motor vehicle types (e.g. passenger, large vehicles, busses),   Experience must include at least two (2) of experience conducting inspections as a licensed mechanic applying federal and state laws, rules, and regulations governing compliance with motor vehicle inspections -OR- 4 years of regulatory experience in the automotive and/or law enforcement industries which included the enforcement of traffic laws and motor vehicle defects/inspections rules.

Licensing Requirements:

  • Obtain and maintain Maine Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection credentials for all vehicle types.
  • A valid Maine State Driver’s License.
