Main Purpose of Job

The Computer Network Specialist II position is a mid-level technical expert. The main purpose of this position is to maintain network equipment and maintain a high level of cyber security on the Local Area Network (LAN), as well as, with assistance from the IT Supervisor and Database Specialist team members, provide help desk support to 80 LAN users of the Boards and Commission. This position will offer email account support for 100 board members. The team together supports 16 boards and one commission, providing them with a reliable and secure technological environment to effectively serve the citizens of the State of Maryland.

Other duties assigned but not limited to:
  • LAN administration, troubleshooting and configuration of a Juniper router, Cisco Catalyst and Meraki switches as needed
  • Daily help desk and technical support including setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting printers, scanners, workstations,
  • Monitoring and patching servers and endpoints to mitigate vulnerabilities using ManageEngine Endpoint Central
  • Ensuring and monitoring cybersecurity using CrowdStrike portal
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting LAN and internet connectivity
  • Setting up and troubleshooting VoIP phones
  • Assisting with disaster recovery planning, testing, and prevention.


This position is eligible for hybrid telework (40% = 2-days a week) which is subject to approval from the supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Two years and six months of experience, one year of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks and an additional eighteen months of experience converting data from project specifications by preparing program code using generally accepted computer programming languages or other developmental tools; planning, installing and maintaining data communications network lines and devices; or evaluating, implementing and maintaining computer hardware and software.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and fifteen credit hours from an accredited college or university in systems analysis and applications programming using generally accepted computer programming languages or other developmental tools for the additional eighteen months of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate and completion of a certification program in Network Administration, such as Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), Microsoft Certified Product Specialist NT 4.0 Administrator or equivalent certification program for the additional eighteen months of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute experience in one of the following areas on a year-for-year basis for graduation from an accredited a high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate: operating computer systems, scheduling, controlling input and output or maintaining backups or data storage, processing data on computer systems, evaluating, implementing and maintaining computer hardware and software or converting data from project specifications by developing programs using generally accepted computer programming languages or other developmental tools.

4. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer information technology, management information systems, or other information technology related field, including course work in local or wide area computer networks, from an accredited college or university and one year of experience planning, integrating and maintaining software and hardware for local or wide area computer networks for the required experience.

5. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Network Analyst classifications or Network Integration and Management specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess:
  • Experience troubleshooting Windows PC and Printer issues
  • Experience supporting a local area network with Active Directory using Group Policies
  • Experience with Endpoint Management applications, such as ManageEngine Endpoint Central
  • Experience with configuring CISCO Meraki and Catalyst switches, and Juniper routers
  • Network (plus) or similar certification or experience
