Position Summary As directed by a supervisor, the incumbent is primarily responsible for performing the duties of a Sprinklerfitter at the journeyman's level. At this level, the incumbent will construct, inspect, repair, and/or maintain building facilities fire protection systems in all MassDOT building facilities and all roadway dry standpipe systems found in the tunnels, bridges and viaducts within the MHS. When not performing duties as previously described, the incumbent may be assigned to perform plumbing duties under the direction of a journeyman plumber as well as a wide variety of tasks within other building maintenance skilled crafts that do not require a specific license or certification. _This is a night position, 11 PM to 7 AM shift Sunday through Thursday._ Duties and Responsibilities * Troubleshoots, repairs, and/or replaces fire hydrants. * Testing of fire pumps, maintenance pump repair and piping repair. * Field maintenance, including recording of readings, pressures; of standpipe systems. * Receives specific assignments and obtains materials and special tools from stock as required. * Uses all standard and special tools required of primary craft and all standard tools required of other crafts as necessary. * When performing work at the journeyman level the incumbent: o Reads and interprets written instructions, diagrams and maintenance manuals o Investigates building equipment or structures to identify causes of breakdown or malfunction and repair. o Plans and organizes work to be performed and verifies that all necessary materials and parts are available. o Constructs, assembles, repairs and/or adjusts building maintenance equipment and/or highway signs. o Instructs and directs less skilled workers who have been assigned to assist in major projects. o Reports breakdowns, deterioration, or malfunction of building equipment to Foreman as noted during inspections and may recommend remedial action and/or the use of new materials and equipment. * Performs diversified building and grounds maintenance work below the journeyman level when not engaged in primary. * Prepares reports on materials, equipment and time spent on various maintenance projects. * Performs skilled fabrication and repairs to motors, pumps, grates, doors and all other equipment on D6 facilities with minimal supervision. * Operates drills, grinders and other applicable tools or equipment as required, and when necessary, assists with mechanical work. * Operates snow removal equipment such as snow blowers and shovels; operates snow plowing and sanding equipment if qualified and licensed; participates in in the random Mass DOT Drug and Alcohol testing pool when applicable. * Performs other duties similar in nature and skill level to the above listed duties. _Preferred Knowledge and Abilities:_ * Knowledge of the types and uses of safety and/or climbing equipment such as scaffolds, ladders, rigging, etc. * Knowledge of lock out tag out procedures. * Knowledge of confined space procedures. * Ability to use a bucket truck to a height of 100 feet. Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts journeyman's license issued by the Division of Professional Licensure Office of Public Safety and Inspections. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least four (4) years of experience in commercial/residential construction or maintenance, the major duties of a fire protection sprinkler fitter. Special Requirements: * High School diploma or GED * Graduation from a qualified trade school in an appropriate craft. * Possession of a current and valid Class D vehicle operator's license. * Possession of a Sprinkler Fitter License - Journeyman Level issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety.
