Job Description

To provide educational programming to prisoners in the areas of adult basic education (ABE) through the achievement of the GED. The teacher will have varying abilities levels in both the classroom setting and cell study program. Accurate and timely record keeping of student progress, assessment testing, data entry, and reporting are all duties that will be required of the position.

Required Education And Experience

Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in a field of education.

Experience

No specific type or amount is required.

Alternate Education And Experience

The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.

This is a drug and alcohol test-designated position.

Position Description

Possession of current, appropriate Michigan teacher's certificate issued by the State Board of Education.

Teachers (other than substitute teachers) who are employed at the School for the Deaf and Blind, state facility for delinquent or neglected youth, or a prison in a special education assignment will be required to obtain six semester credits per year until full approval for employment in the Special Education Teacher classification has been met.
