Job Summary


This posting will be used to fill up to two (2) vacancies in the NW region of the state.

This position guards the safety and health of occupants and users of buildings in Minnesota through inspection that assures compliance with the provisions of Minnesota Statutes and Rules regulating the electrical industry. Provides technical support and consultation to promote safety standards in electrical construction practices by applying the knowledge of electrical theory and uniform application of general construction principles and practices.

The District 1 inspection areas include:

  • D1A1 - Beltrami County
  • D1A2 - Eastern Ottertail and Wadena Counties

Occasional in-state and/or overnight travel is required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct inspections for electrical installations to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the Electrical Act. Work collaboratively with stakeholders to conduct electrical inspection and compliance activities that promote uniform, high quality electrical installations.
  • Establish, manage, and utilize an office from which inspection operations are conducted; be available to clientele as necessary.
  • Administer the provisions of electrical statutes and rules related to electrical inspections to ensure that qualified individuals are conducting business in order to ensure safety to life and property.
  • Assist, organize, monitor and perform electrical inspections for transitory projects including carnival and circus inspections; special events (i.e. golf tournaments, agricultural shows, other sporting events); county fairs; movie sets; road contractors, etc.; and ensure safety to life and property.
  • Assist supervisor and managers with other duties as assigned that enables the division to meet its goals and objectives timely and effectively.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Minnesota Class A Journeyworker Electrician OR Class A Master Electrician license.

  • Knowledge of the Minnesota Electrical Act; and Minnesota Rules, regulations and standards regarding electrical safety, electrical inspections, and electrical licensing of electricians sufficient to enforce their provisions.

  • Knowledge and application related to electrical theory and the National Electrical Code.

  • Knowledge and understanding of electrical construction and maintenance work including the practical use and application of materials, equipment, and tools.

  • Working knowledge of building and various other construction codes related to electrical installations.

  • Ability to read and understand drawings, specifications, manufacturer’s instructions and other technical information related to electrical installations.

  • Ability to inspect the work of others to determine compliance with statutes, rules and codes that are within the authority of the Department.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad base of clientele and DLI personnel.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with a wide range of backgrounds, who do not share your same culture, ethnicity, language, or other common experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minnesota Class A Master Electrician license.

  • Completion of a two (2) year technical college program in electrical construction and/or maintenance; or equivalent training or education.

  • Experience planning and laying out electrical work for licensed contractors or registered employers.

  • Experience enforcing electrical licensing and inspection laws and rules.

  • Experience inspecting electrical wiring for a government inspection authority.

  • Experience managing construction projects or business activities involving multiple employees or contractors.

  • Language skills other than English (such as Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Karen or ASL).
