Why does the job exist?
The Director of the Math and Science Bureau is responsible for supporting districts, schools, and educators in the content areas of
science, technology, math, engineering, computer science, and outdoor education. Director manages all bureau staff and serves
as a member of the Curriculum & Instructional Leadership team at PED.

How does it get done?
The Director leads the Math and Science Bureau, in concert with the C&I Division Director, in providing academic and instructional
supports to districts and educators across the state. Director will lead the bureau in providing technical assistance and
professional learning opportunities to assure that all students across the state have access to guaranteed, viable, and equitable
curriculum and instruction in the STEM, computer science, and outdoor learning academic areas. Updating and writing guidance
and rule, aligned to applicable statutes, will be an integral part of the functions performed. The Director manages the bureau
budget, related contracts, and IGAs, and supervisors bureau employees.
Who are the customers?
Customers include districts personnel (superintendents, principals, administrators, teachers), RECs and other external partners,
legislative staff, and agency personnel across all bureaus and divisions.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have five (5) of more years of work in a school setting as an teacher, instructional coach, or educational
administrator. Candidate will be able lead a team in envisioning, starting and seeing project to completion. The work also
requires the ability to work on several projects simultaneously and pay attention to detail. Must be able to coordinate projects

across many stakeholder groups including districts, schools, vendors and other agency bureaus and divisions.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration or Business Administration and five (5) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Executive Order 2021-066 requires all employees with the State of New Mexico to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination (including proof of a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster dose) or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.
The Public Health Order (on Vaccination) dated December 2, 2021, requires Congregate Care Facility Workers and Hospital Workers to have received a primary series of vaccination by October 6, 2021, and a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster.

Office setting, exposure to Visual Nideo Display terminal (VDTI and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with
extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Occasional over night travel.
